Hi everyone, we are planning on our first family trip (4 kids from 13 to 4) to Kauai in august 2012. Apparently most 2 bedroom timeshares are available in Kauai. Can anyone give their opinions of a timeshare. Should we stay in the north or south? Thank you in advance!

St. Regis Princeville Resort
Westin Princeville Resort
my top 2... weather2travel.com check on rain in August LOTS
Hyatt Waikiloa Kona or Hapuna Prince usually better
more variety less rain on the BI... usually lots cheaper 2
priceline.com great deals on the Prince for me in Aug
a couple of years ago $1k pp including air... 4 hours direct
from LAX beats connecting flights to pieces.

I can't speak to anything other than the Marriott Waiohai in Poipu, and it's great, as long as your condo doesn't overlook the parking lot. The grounds are gorgeous, the units are large, nicely decorated and fully outfitted. It's got a couple of nice pools, and it's on a very nice beach. It's across the street from a small shopping center with a few restaurants, and about 4 miles from the town of Koloa, with small shops, markets and restaurants. The "user" pictures on Trip Advisor are very accurate.
That time of year, I'd look at the Westin up on the North Shore.
Marriott in Lihue is nice also, but does not have full kitchens (used to be a hotel and parts of it still are), has kitchenette with microwave, small dishwasher and small fridge.
Thank you. qwovadis we are also contemplating going to the big island so thank you for your suggestions. With trading our timeshare thru RCI, we don't have access to Marriotts unfortunately. Wyndham Shearwater or Wyndham Kauai Beach Villas are a few options that look good. Anyone been there or any non marriott timeshares? Thank you again for everyones help!
My favorite is the Marriott on Kalapaki beach. It is a very good beach for children.

I've been on the property and at the pools (but not inside the units) at both of these resorts. The Wyndham Shearwater on the North Shore would be my choice hands down. But I love the North Shore.
The resort at the Kauai Beach Villas is nice--but not as large or impressive as the Shearwater. The Shearwater is five minutes from Hanalei town--and gorgeous Hanalei Bay. There's nothing that beautiful that close to KBV. The main thing KBV has going for it is a "central" location--but I'd recommend spending most of your time on the North Shore anyway.
KBV is on a beach--but it's not a swimming beach. I believe the Shearwater has a shuttle to the GORGEOUS beach it shares with the Princeville Hotel, but no beach right at the hotel. (It requires a long, steep walk.)
No need to worry about the weather in August. Most of the rain at the North Shore comes at night -- or during very brief showers. I've been there every summer for the past six years and have never had a rainy period. Not even sure I've ever had an entire rainy day--although there have been showers.
Enjoy!
songdoc, presumably the original poster has and gone!
lindy45 is advertising and topped it for that purpose.
oops. Didn't notice. Well, hopefully, someone else will get something from the info--or maybe the OP will plan a return trip! I'm counting the days ... 22 till paradise!
Soon you're going to be reporting on your trips home (few) instead of your trips to paradise (many)
