Answer the poster's question or stay off the site!
Randy-Carl's Chop House is just off the Lodge near downtown. It has great prime rib (all I've ever had there!) but I bet they also have good steaks. Atmosphere is something out of the 1950's but good service and food.

I've lived in the Detroit area all my life, so don't listen to Parker who has "visited twice". In the downtown area, the Rattlesnake Club is good. My personal favorite is off I-75 at the Big Beaver exit in Troy, Ruth's Chris Steak House. Always a winner!

Yea, you'll get a whole lot more Canadian dollars for your US dollars, but then it will cost you a whole lot more Canadian dollars for the same caliber restaurant, except it will be hard to find a restaurant in Windsor to compare in quality with a good one in Detroit.

Two good steak places in Troy. Ruth Chriss as stated before and Schula's in the Troy Marriott. I prefer Ruth Chriss because of their Au Gautin Potatos but they both have Prime Steak! The Windsor restaurants stated earlier are not Prime but are more reasonable

Native,
Depends on what you are looking for. My best friend and other co-workers said great things about the Ruth's Chris in KC, so I tried it.
The service was poor despite the restaurant not being very busy. They were so slow clearing old plates that we ended up setting some on the next table. And a server actually spilled food on my back.
The food was OK but IMO not nearly worth the price.
So I went back to the friend that had insisted I should try it. He said that he never said the food was great, but that it was so much fun to have martinis in the bar and smoke a $50 cigar.

I travel all over and fnd Detroit has more good restaurants than most other cities. I have found better dining in Detroit than Chicago, Columbus, Cleveland and Frisco. Detroit is more spread out than some of those other places so you need a car and a map.
The Lark is superior. Lellie's and Larco's make great steaks. Ruth Chris' and Capitol Grill are both chains but are also excellent.
If you got stranded in Detroit you would not go hungry.

Must have been some trips, Parker. Were you there for about a year on each trip? There are thousands of restaurants in Detroit, quite a number of good ones. Just because you went to a few and they weren't great doesn't mean they aren't there. You just went to the wrong ones. Did you go to Rattlesnake Club, Carl's, the Lark, or Capitol Grill? All have outstanding steaks.
No, Detroit isn't a San Francisco or New York when it comes to fine dining, but their are still some very fine restaurants there.

most of the recommendations have been for the northern suburbs of Detroit not the Western areas mentioned by Randy. I think the Rattlesnake club was great in 1990 but I've been disappointed lately. It is no chop house anyway.
The downtown Detroit area hasn't had many interesting new restaurants for a while. Growth is in the suburbs as it has been for many years.
The best steak I've had in years was at an Italian restaurant in Franklin(?). Il Posto on Northwestern Highway. Superb filet sauteed rare and served with their zip sauce. This is a special restaurant. Have the 3 pasta course and maybe the carapaccio with figs for appetizer. Mangia bene.
There surely is a fine steak house in Ann Arbor with all those Wolverines.
