Best Steakhouse in NY and other restaurant ideas?
Hi everyone,
Off to NY next Friday to run in the marathon as well as visit this city for the first time. Any hidden treasures to share? Looking for a nice steakhouse so I'm looking for everyone's favorite! Also, I've got tickets booked for Wicked and the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Can anyone suggest some good places for pre-theatre dining? Thank you for all your help!!!

Assuming you don't want to head to Brooklyn to Peter Luger's, I'd suggest Smith and Wollensky -- where I prefer the bar dining room rather than the "stuffier" main dining rooms.
I have had poor steaks, poor service, and mediocre food generally at Gallagher's and don't know why it remains so popular. Frankie and Johnny's was even worse.
Remaining on my list that I haven't done is Keen's and Bobby Van's, both highly recommended by people I trust.

Harry's Steak & Cafe all the way down in the financial disctrict has a pretty amazing NY Strip and ribeye. It is often overlooked since it's not in midtown, but probably some of the best steak in the city right now. The Times reviewed it recently.
BLT Steak is also good if you're looking for something different from the usual steakhouse atmosphere inside the resaurant.
Reliable classics include Lugers (porterhouse), Del Frisco (ribeye), Sparks (filet mignon).

My personal favorite steakhouse is Del Frisco's. Their side dishes are also great! If you like bacon on your creamed spinach.. I never had a bad experience there (went 4 times).
Spark's by far has the best steak, ok side dish.
S&W was too hyped up IMO. Food was fine but I just had a bad experience there. Ruth's Chris is always nice.
Peter Luger, to get to is a journey on its own. Great steak but I doubt I will ever try it again.

Spark's is the BEST steakhouise in Manhattan. Terrific cuts and the best wine list among steakhouses.
Keen's is almost as good. The old New York ambiance is unique.
Gor a non-steakhouse, the steaks at the Knickebocker Grill in the Village is very good.

I had a great steak at Sparks, but even with a reservation, I had to wait for a table. It was the best I've had, but the uncomfortable bumping into people while we waited to sit ruined the experience. I went to Bobby Vans on 54th last week and would highly recommend it.
Good luck in the race.

We were in NYC last weekend, and another Fodorite gave me the very good advice to look for little restaurants in the Time Square/theater area, by walking a few blocks west from the Marriott there. It was great advice, as there are restaurants in every doorway, and each looked great. We chose Danny's Grand Sea Palace, www.dannysgsp.com, at 346-348 West 46th Street, 212 265 8130. It was pretty good, not great, but fine. You could certainly find something to your liking on this block, but not necessarily for steak.
