Best shopping in West L. A. and San Francisco - looking for the unique and "quirky"
I would like to get feed back on what you guys consider to be the really neat, unique shopping places in West L. A. and/or San Francisco. What types of shops am I looking for...
1. I love bath and body shops or stores that specialize in cosmetics, like Fred Segal in Santa Monica or Lush.
2. I like interesting t-shirts that have really funny or profound sayings on them. Not looking for California souveneir shirts.
3. Other interesting or cute or funny stores. For example, I think there was a shop on Melrose that specialized in all sorts of wind up gadgets and toys, the store was called Wound and Wound (I think). In San Francisco, I think there was a place in Chinatown where you could get a "chop" made - a stone stamp with your name in Chinese characters.
Any stores that fit these catagories.

Just returned from SFO and there is a Lush on Powell, a block from Union Square. I like to shop in the Castro area and Haight Ashbury. Some people will knock these areas but both have some great funky stores. There's a few interesting body product stores in both areas (I can't recall the store names) and I always find great, clever shirts for my teenage daughter on Haight.

Terrific area to shop in SFO is UNION STREET-- Not to be confused with Union Sq...
Union Street, one of the most favorite and well trafficked shopping areas in San Francisco is nestled between Pacific Heights and the Marina areas. Very upscale, unique, one-of-a-kind shops are typical on this street as well as many well known restaurants. It is also a very social area day and night.

everytime we hit SFO , we go shopping and eating on this street...lots of neat little bistros and Great FUNKY shops...

Bath and perfume: Palmetto in Santa Monica and there is one on Third Street in Los Angeles. Also, Mistral on Third and Glow on Third. None of these are exactly West Los Angeles, but then neither is Melrose.
Shops on Melrose change frequently. If I were you I'd investigate Third Street and Beverly Blvd for unique shops.

Don't forget Castro Street -- you can spend a whole day there. (Different Light bookstore and Cliff's Variety are 2 of my favorite browsing areas.)
I also like Union STREET. Very upscale, though, so don't expect any bargains.

Yes SFI, Nancy Boy is one of them... my daughter and I love the Castro area because the people are so wonderful. We head out at lunch time on a Saturday or Sunday and the people in the Castro area are... well... gay. Sorry, I could not help that one. All kidding aside, we find that the shop owners in the Castro area are among the friendliest in the US. It makes us want to return every time we are in SFO.
I also love the little Italian grocery store in the Castro. They have samples of wonderful gourmet foods. Today, a week after my return to DFW, I am enjoying a great pesto sauce purchased after a sampling! Is the place called Ferrari's?

That would be AG Ferrari. They are a wonderful italian goods store, even if prices tend to be on the "dear" side. Actually, they are not unique to the Castro but are a Bay Area chain of sorts. They now have 13 locations in the SF Bay Area only -- and they say they have no plans to expand beyond here. Find out more at www.agferrari.com
