Please suggest some good places for teenage shopping. We were there last year and didn't discover H & M until almost time to leave, but it was fantastic. I have been reading about Canal Jeans...a good choice?

Canal Jeans would have been a perfect place, but I believe it's closed or is closing. A Soho branch of Bloomingdale's is supposed to open up there later this year. A fave store with NYU students is Antique Boutique, a little further up on Broadway, at 4th Street. They sell used (recycled? distressed? antique?) clothing. The same neighborhood also has the large Tower Records & Books store, if she's interested in records.

Lower Broadway in general (which is where Canal Jeans is located) has plenty of shopping in every imaginable category. Start at Union Square / 14th Street and just walk downtown. You may also try the St. Mark's Place area - lots of NYU students hang out there and there should be good choices. My daughter is now 21 but she STILL loves going to Chinatown to shop , as do her friends when they come to visit. She has been that way about Chinatown since here first visit there at age 14. Lots of weird, funky little food stalls and the street vendors on Canal Street (going in either direction from Broadway) have lots of cool knock-offs. Yes... they are knock-offs but $5 "Gucci" sunglasses etc. can be plenty fun to sport at that age.

Macy's on 34th St. is grungy, down-at-heel, but has perhaps the best junior fashion dept (4th) floor in NYC. Always tons of stuff on sale. They also have teen-friendly cosmetic lines on the same floor. A fantastic selection. My daughters are wild about it. Also, Macy's has possibly the best lingerie selection in the city. Just up the street from Macy's is a branch of H&M. Also, on 57th St. between 5th-Madison is Niketown, which my daughters tell me has the latest style in sneakers, before you see them anywhere else, and cool sportswear. Tiffany's (cor. 57th) is currently very "in" among teen girls, for their silver bracelets, earrings, etc., and somehow the mother-lode Tiffany's store thrills kids more than any branch shops they may have been in. You can easily make all these stops in your 1-day visit.

There's a great store called Century 21 across fromt he WTC site. They have cheaper designer clothes if they are interested in that kind of thing.

I second Century 21 but stuff can be expensive. Good deals (shoes originally $750 for $100) and all the designer names. It is truly a place where department stores send their stuff that doesn't sell. Syms is another place I like.

Also Strawberry and Boltons.

Urban Outfitters is definitely a great place to shop when you're a teen. 628 Broadway (village area). There are quite a few in the city, but I've always enjoyed this one the most.

I second Owen's suggestion of lower Broadway, from a few blocks north of Houston down to Canal Street. Maybe you'll want to start on Canal Street (known for designer knockoff handbags, watches, sunglasses) because that's where the best bargains are.

I believe Canal Jeans is closed by now.

I would also suggest Conway and there are several locations in the city, but the biggest one is right next to Macy's on 35th and Broadway. They have great teen clothing, and the prices are great. Tons of tee shirts, jeans and summer clothes if you are coming in the late spring.

Also Daffy's is right in the area as well, one of my favorite stores, great clothing and great prices. There is also one on lower broadway close to Canal St.

I also say lower broadway. Start at 14th and walk down 4th avenue, that was you can hit Astor place and St Marks place. Then go over to Broadway and go all the way down to Canal. If you are doing hard core shopping this is like an all day trip. And if you got teenage daughters, they'll probably pick up a copule tattoos and piercings at St. Marks, but what the hey, its a vacation.

I'd add Ricky's, a drug store, for cosmetics, hair accessories, and costume jewelry. Perfect place for teenagers, inexpensive and tends to be ahead of the trends, with lots of new stuff all the time, not the same national brands. There are two on Broadway, one around 4th St and one on the block below Houston; one or both will be on your route if you're doing the St Mark's/lower Broadway tour. There's also an H&M on Broadway below Houston, but it's much smaller than the ones on 5th Ave or 34th St.

My 13-year-old niece enjoyed the Lower Broadway/Canal Street shopping even more AFTER we visited the uptown Bloomingdale's. After the incredible sticker shock of the Bloomie's price tags, the downtown knock-off prices for the same styles were so much more enjoyable! And she loved gathering all the free samples from the cosmetics floor at Bloomingdale's, too.

In Soho, there are two stores called Girl Props. They are distinguished by their zebra striped storefronts. They have the trendiest, most up-to-the-momemnt jewelry and really cheap prices. I think their website is girlprops.com.

Oh, yes, Ricky's--great store. Wonderful selection of skin and hair care products, funky fashion/disguise looks, and, in a quiet back corner of the store, sex toys. Don't think my kids have noticed the back section. There are also branches on W. 23rd St., W. 58th corner of 8th, and W. 72nd near Columbus.
