Best route for a road trip Chicago to San Francisco
From April 28 - May 15 we will be traveling in an RV from Chicago to San Francisco. It is the first time that we have rented a RV and we are really looking forward to it. I'm just not sure what the best route is? I hear that the I-80 is quite boring so for now we are looking into a route that mainly follows the I-90: Chicago - La Crosse - Sioux Falls - Badlands NP - Custer - Cody - Yellowstone - Grand Teton - Jackson - Twin Falls - Yosemite - Lake Tahoe - SFO.
My questions are:
- Is this route ok early May? Not too cold / too much chance on snow?
- Any suggestions for stops or RV campgrounds on this route?
- Should we also consider a more southern (warmer ) route? Any suggestions? We love nature / scenery
Thanks for your great help
Ronald

As to Route 80 (near which I grew up in Wyoming) yes, many would say, and especially compared to your suggested alternative, it is very "boring." Flat across Nebraska; one big hill between Cheyenne and Laramie, and then the long stretch through Medicine Bow and Rawlins and across the Great Divide Basin.
Your more northerly route offers so much more to see and do. I would check in terms of roads which are open through Yellowstone, some routes are not completely open to traffic until very late in the Spring.

Get to Yosemite ASAP and take the northern route on the way back. https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/conditions.htm
As of last week there was snow in Bryce Canyon in southern Utah.
