I drive from Boston to Richmond about 8-10 times a year, but always by car, using the GSP/Tappan Zee and my beloved EZ Pass.
Next week I have to drive a 12 foot rental truck from RIC to BOS and can't use the Parkway (or my EZ Pass)!
What is the best route?
I assume NJ Turnpike to GW Bridge but then should I stay on 95 on the Cross Bronx or go north on 87 (Major Deegan) to 684 or 95?
Thanks for the help!

My suggestion is to stay as far away from NYC as possible.
I would stay on I87 north to I84 East to I90 East.
You can also save on tolls by taking I295 north to I287 then to I87.
As far as I know, you can use your EZ Pass. All you should have to do is add the license plate of the Rental truck. Do note that tolls will be higher (assuming the dual wheels in the back). You should be able to add the license plate via the Internet or call their 800 number. I have done it plenty of times with mine - albeit for cars.
I'm a Manhattan resident and I rent cars at least 2 times per month - I own an ez pass but not a car - I have never added a rental car license number to my pass - always get accurate bills - it's never been an issue for me. Also, lots of rental cars in the NYC area come w/ their own passes - you might want to check to see if your rental agency does that. They usually charge an additional fee for its use tho.
The EZ Pass accuracy issue is related to the type of vehicle, not the actual license plate. So it's OK to transfer it to another car, but if you're driving a vehicle that pays a higher toll, you need to let EZ Pass know that.
mp - W hen I sold my car, I also believed that I could use my EZ Pass for rental cars. Just to make sure I called EZ Pass and asked if I could do that. They warned me that if I did I could be subject to a fine - and that could be substantial. Yes - the odds are that they don't detect your use of the rental car - but they do have photo capability at these booths - so I just pay the cash toll.
I've driven between Boston and DC many times in cars, an RV and a 14-foot rental truck. I agree with gb944's suggestion.
jroth - thanks for the warning, but as i have had the ez pass since it's inception and never had a problem, I think I will continue to risk the fine - which frankly, seems arbitrary and illogical.
Followup on this trip.
It turned out to be easier than expected with one exception.
My truck was a van-with-a-box from Penske.
ecause it had only 4 wheels and weighed less than 10,000 lbs,
I could drive it in the automobile lanes on the Jersey Turnpike and on the GSP.
Even better, I paid auto tolls EXCEPT at the Tappan Zee Bridge, where I was charged $14.25 instead of $4 because it was more than 7 feet high. This is a bizarre reason to charge extra since there is no clearance issue anywhere on the interstate, but the ways of our feesetters are mysterious.
I saw more traffic-delaying accidents on this trip than in an entire winter of regularly driving this route: Beltway on 95, NJT north of exit 5, Parkway south of Paterson, 684 next to a big reservoir (left side north bound). These were mostly multicar.
Traffic enforcement was also extremely heavy, much more like a holiday weekend than an ordinary Tuesday.
Glad it worked out well for you.
I am looking for a truck hire company who gives or arrange trucks for long road transportation. I am moving from Florida to Richmond and I have a load of material or stuff with me. The truck driver should know the path because I am gonna need it ASAP.

For a minute I thought it took Akislander two years to get from Boston to Richmond.

If you want answers you should start your own thread. And it sounds like what you need is a moving company. Or possibly "2 guys with a truck". Regular rental companies don;t provide drivers.
