Our family will be traveling to New England in August. We're staying with family in Vermont, then we'll be on our own for a few days. We plan on going to Blue Shutters beach in Westerly for the day, and then to Mystic Connecticut. If anyone knows of any good family-friendly hotels, please let me know. Also, if you know of better places to take the kids, any suggestions are welcome. We've never been to New England before. Thanks!!

I'm not sure about kid friendly hotels since I lived in the area and never needed a hotel. As for things to do with the kids:
Mystic Aquarium - I still love it there.
A lot of people love Mystic Seaport, but it never interested me too much.
Boat rides in the Mystic River.
Spend an afternoon at Watch Hill in Westerly. The kids may like the carousal and there are some nice little shops and good ice cream. Plus it's nice to drive around and look at the houses.
If you have the time I'd take a side trip over to Newport, RI. Providence, RI also has "Waterfire" (www.waterfire.com) on select nights in the summer, next to Providence Place Mall where there's a Dave & Busters (arcade/restaurant). A day trip to Block Island, RI is also a nice trip. There's a ferry from Pt. Judith.
