best neighborhood in New Orleans

We're going to spend a week in New Orleans in the spring. What neighborhood is the best place to stay? Thank you.

What do you want to do? That sort of tells you where you want to stay--is it just 2 of you or a family?

Most people try to stay in the center of the French quarter which is generally safe although it can be very loud late in the evening depending on the street.

I personally prefer the Arts/Warehouse district to the FQ.

Spring is my favorite time to visit New Orleans. There are many festivals at this time.I suggest you search B&Bs here on Trip advisor for the Marigny neighborhood. I like the Cresent City Guesthouse.

Just the two of us. Shopping, history/culture, food and wine. We like to walk but don't want to be too far on the outskirts.

We like the French Quarter Guesthouses. there are several of them in the French Quarter. Have stayed at the Inn on St. Peter, Inn on Ursiline, and one other. Really liked the location of Inn on Ursuline. they run good specials, like stay 3 nights, get 4th free, etc.

When in the Spring?

If it's during Jazz Fest, you'd best book your lodging asap.

Will you have a car?

We're planning on April 22ish-early May. We are not planning to have a car.

Thanks.

DON'T WAIT ON LODGING - ACT FAST. sf7307 is right - the last weekend in April through the first weekend in May is JazzFest and the city expands in size.

Plus, JazzFest not only floods the lodging, but means more people in the night-spots and restaurants. Unlike most music festivals, JazzFest does NOT go deep into the night. Each day's acts end no later than 7 pm. That means restaurants in the Quarter, CBD, Garden District and Marigny will be loaded up with visitors too - the 50,000 people per day who attend JazzFest won't be holed up at the venue eating there while waiting for the 8 pm headliner . . .

Thanks about the JazzFest. Would you suggest not going at that time?

If you have a choice, and you aren't interested in JazzFest, then yes, it might be better to go another time.

JazzFest is probably my favorite music festival experience ever, so if you are interested, try to work through the expense. I should say, though, that sometimes there is bad weather which can even result in cancellations and definitely lots of rain and mud. I was lucky in 2014 to get none of that, but instead perfect weather.

I love staying in the Marigny, near Franklin restaurant. Beautiful, atmospheric neighborhood, lots of cute cafes and restaurants, near to the nightlife on Frenchman Street and St. Claude, and not very far from the French Quarter. Except for a couple of B&Bs, your only lodging option here is AirBnB (or I suppose another apartment rental site).

Having said that, I had to stay in the Marriott on Canal Street for most of my last visit, and that was great too.

I have also stayed in MidCity right off Esplanade, and I enjoyed that plus it's a long but comfortable walk to Jazz Fest.

Thank you. We're not into huge crowds, so I think we'll wait until after the JazzFest. If anyone has must-sees or must-eats, we'd love to hear them.

Good choice. JazzFest = big crowds throughout NOLA.

I'd stay closer to the Quarter or Canal St. Staying in the Marigny may be dicey if you don't know the city and the area.

I like staying in the FQ, but on the side between Jackson Square and Esplanade - its a quieter section, more residential, less commercial. Its still a quick walk to everything though.

I agree with staying in the FQ or Canal or even Uptown as you can take the streetcar to the FQ.

I love Herbsaint and Coquette.

Tableau has been awesome for dinner all 4 times we have been there in the last 2 yrs. It overlooks Jackson Square. Get reservations to sit at a table outside upstairs on the balcony and specify that you want to be at one of the 3 tables at the corner at Jackson Square if possible. Do t be afraid to order turtle soup here, it is awesome. They serve half portions of many dishes, which is great.
