Best Naples Beaches?

Best Naples Beaches?
I'm off to Naples, FL this weekend with my lady-friend, and after clearing up the whole red tide thing, we were wondering what the best beach in Naples is? We are not so much interested in shelling or wildlife, but more into laying back, catching the rays, and taking an occasional dip. White sand and green waters are a plus, though from what i remember they're pretty much anywhere in Naples. Also, can you bring your own cocktails/beers on any of the beaches? Is Marco Island any good? Thanks!

I guess it depends on what you want and where you are staying. You are right that most of the length of Naples beaches are pretty much the same, a little wider here or there, and certainly much busier further north in front of the major hotels or condominium complexes.
My personal favorite is the far south end, particularly south of the pier. There are only large very expensive homes there and you often have the beach pretty much to yourself. It is a bit narrower there that some places.
Between the pier (12th Avenue South) and the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club (about 7th Avenue North), it tends to be a bit busier, but is still a nice section of beach.
About the only place with any showers, restrooms, or other facilites in this entire long stretch of beach is right at the pier, which accounts for the little bit of extra crowd.
Nearly every street within the city of Naples has public access. Just take a couple rolls of quarter for the parking meters. You will need to feed them and they DO ticket you if you don't.
I'm pretty sure it is technically illegal to have alcoholic beverages on the beach, but it is reallllllly common. My personal belief is that it remains as a law that can be enforced in case there are groups of drinkers congregating. I suggest you keep a low profile -- the beers in those thermal sleeves, or drinking wine out of opague glasses, and I can assure you that you won't end up in jail!
I personally don't like Marco, but I'll readily admit the beaches are pretty wonderful there. I hear they have gotten really busy though lately, particularly at Tigertail, the main public access point.
And rishi, as a daily update on the weather -- pretty spectacular again today. In the 60's this morning which I love (but not as hot as some would like), but 80 and sunny now at 1:30 PM.

UPDATE: thanks so much for all the tips! Weather was a bit rocky on Saturday, but Sun. and Mon. were amazing. Had dinner at Boathouse and Trulucks. Both fantastic (though touristy, i realize).
Beaches were great - south end especially (Thanks Patrick!). Tried out vanderbilt just to see what all the fuss was about - nice for people watching, but parking was a nightmare.
Marco Island (tigertail) on Monday - loved it, and not too crowded at all. Overall, excellent trip, and now I'm soo brown!

Thinking about staying at the Ritz in early November.
At the resort areas are you allowed alcoholic beverages on the beach (one of my requirements!)?
Also, what should the weather be like in early November? Hopefully still warm enough for beach/pool or else I need to change our trip to Sept or Oct.

A very useful post! I'm leaving Thursday for Marco and hoping to spend some time in Naples. We had another cold weekend here in Virginia so I'm ready for some sunshine and warmth. Will I get it, Patrick?
