Best May/Jun Yosemite lodging areas: Yosemite West, El Portal, or Wawona?
We're planning a trip in late May/early June 2017 to include 3-4 days in Yosemite. I understand lodging needs to be booked well in advance. I also understand that, due to summer crowds, traffic, etc. that "the closer (one is to Yosemite), the better." I'm exploring motel/hotel/private condo/home options in: Yosemite West, El Portal, and Wawona, and I am wondering which area might be preferable, pros/cons of each, etc? Travel time/access to Yosemite Valley/Tioga road sites, location of amenities (grocery stores, restaurants, etc.) are important. Perhaps another variable would be a peaceful/more quiet place for us to end the day.
We are a family of 4---- two sons in their early 20s plus late 50s/early 60s parents. We'd like to explore the Yosemite Valley/Tioga road beauty. Hiking and driving the scenic routes will likely be our main focus. We will have one car rental vehicle. I'm not sure from which direction we will arrive, but best guess at this point would be from the East (perhaps having visited Yellowstone and Grand Tetons).
Thank you in advance for any advice and suggestions you might offer.

I was very happy with the Yosemite View Lodge in El Portal. I stayed there twice. There's a very good market close by (the El Portal Market) and I appreciated having a kitchenette.
Staying in the park would have been my preference because of the 20 - 30 minute drive and the line to get into the park. But the in-park lodging was sold-out, and would have been much more expensive. If you stay at Yosemite View Lodge I recommend spending the extra money for a river-view room. It was fantastic having the sights and sounds of the rushing river right outside our door.
I LOVED Yosemite! Have a great trip.
