Best Location in NYC?

I'm trying to plan a trip to NYC this Sept. Been to NY once in Feb for quick weekend trip. Stayed at the Hotel Avalon. Walked thru some of Central Park, Little Italy, Chinatown and Financial district but mostly stayed on the East side. Should I look at hotels on the Upper East & West sides? Any other locations?

Also, we are planning this for Labor Day Weekend. Is there anything going on that weekend in Central Park?

There are bunch of very nice hotels on the south side of the park.

What do you want to do while you are here? I would stay on the Upper East Side only if I wanted to be close to museums and some particular fancy restaurants--though in truth I think most famous new places are downtown. Or if some some reason I wanted to experience that neighborhood.

Upper West Side--if I wanted to go to Lincoln Center at night and walk home to the hotel. Or walk in Riverside Park.

Otherwise I think a visitor is better off in midtown--to me the main thing is to be able to get home easily at the end of the evening, and if that's at the theatre, a hotel in the east or west 30s (west 30s actually not nice), 40s, or 50s means you can walk home.

After staying in various areas in NYC, I prefer the west side-midtown. It's an individual thing. South of central park in say the Essex House is a great location as well. I really don't care to stay in the upper east side.

You might consider the Hotel Lucerne, at West 79th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. It is within walking distance of Central Park and the American Museum of Natural History. Broadway in that vicinity has a very pleasant neighborhood feel-- you are not far from Lincoln Center, either. If you were to take in a show, you'd be a short ride uptown from Times Square on the 1 or the 9 train (to 79th Street). Alternatively, you could take a quick cab ride.
