I loved A Pacific Cafe in Kapaa - the food was fantastic. Another suggestion is Cafe Hanalei at the Princeville Resort for its stunning views of Bali Hai.
Aloha from the north shore of Kaua`i...
Depending on how large your food budget is, some of our "best" restaurants are:
La Cascata - Princeville (Princeville Hotel)
Sabella's - Princeville
A Pacific Cafe - Kapa`a
Coconuts - Kapa`a
Cafe Portofino - Kalapaki Bay (Marriott)
Duke's - Kalapaki Bay (Marriott)
Roy's - Po`ipu
Tidepools - Po`ipu (Hyatt)
I'm sure you may have tried already but you should get a lot of info if you type in Kauai restaurants under the search function. But my fav place is Tidepools at the Hyatt. Another place I absolutely loved was Gaylords at Kilohana Plantation. I would say Beach House has good food but the sunset view is the main reason to go there.

autiemaria....what and where is Sabella's?

Tidepools and the BeachHouse (best view!)
Sabella's is in the Pali Ke Kua condo complex...makai (ocean) side of the main Princeville road, just before Princeville Hotel. The former occupant of the building was The Beamreach restaurant.
The Sabella family has had well-known Italian seafood restaurants in the San Francisco Bay area for decades. Roz Sabella Clark opened this one less than a year ago, and just brought in a new chef in recent months. Their first menu was good -- but the new one is an _additional_ four pages (!!) of seafood, game, pasta, and more. Be sure to save room for a selection from their extensive dessert menu, too.
We ate there again last night -- now an almost-weekly dinner spot for us. Excellent service, beautifully-presented yummy food, delicious wine (Australian, this time), and the never-disappointing sunset views of the pali (mountains).
Casa di Amici
.
Coconuts
Cafe Hanalei (some say this place is slipping)
Hamura's Saimin (I literally get hunger twinges when I think about the noodle broth and the fried won-tons). Go after a busy day hiking or sightseeing or something.
Roy's
Tidepools
Thanks auntie for your detailed firsthand reports on Sabellas. Based on your experiences we will check it out next July while in Hanalei

We just got back from Kauai and we absolutely loved eating at Tidepools at the Hyatt and the Koi put on a great fwatershow. WE also loved eating at CAfe Hanalie (wow waht a view and the foold ws very good too) We also at at Zelos and Polynsia CAfe both were OK but don't go out of your way.
We had a great meal and gorgeous sunset at the Beach House in Poipu. However, our table was right by the outdoors and the mosquitos were a little annoying after sundown. I would go back though.
For a good, reasonably priced breakfast or lunch I would recommend Eggbert's.
We really enjoyed Duke's - must have had dinner there 3 nights of our trip! Also, really liked Roy's, too - order the Pot Roast - to die for!!
The friday night seafood buffet at the Princeville was excellent. If you go at sunset, ask for a table on the patio.
What part of the island? Tidepools is a really nice place in the Poipu area. Duke's and Roys are also in the Poipu area and have good food. Save your money and stay away from the Beach House.
We like the Beachhouse for

dinner
cafe hanalei at the princeville...the sunday brunch is very nice too.
