We are going to Las Vegas mid June for a special occasion. We are torn between the following hotels. THEHotel at Mandalay Bay (but it is far from everything), The Bellagio (but hear their are long walks to get anywhere), The Venetian or Palazzo (but hear there are some unusal smells). We are an older couple and would prefer a hotel that dfoes not have alot of kids and is a little quieter.

Also if we pick the Bellagio which rooms are best to stay in? We are leaning towards the Bellagio.

Also restaurant suggestions for a special occasion - steak or seafood would be good.

I'm one of the people who can't spend a lot of time in the Venetian due to the smell of the air freshener they use.

What time of year are you going to be there? The popularity of Vegas as a family vacation spot has REALLY gone down. It is now much more of an adult destination, and if you are there during the school year, you will hardly see any kids at all.

I haven been in most of them. I prefer Caesars to them all. Stay away from Circus Circus, NYNY, the Stratosphere ad Luxor they are cheesy. My friends stayed in Mandalay and loved it. I hear the new Aria is very very upscale and nice. Try expedia for pictures to get a feel for the places. Good luck, win big!

In mid June the best hotel would not be in Las Vegas but someplace much cooler.

The Bellagio is lovely, it has a very nice pool area but the restaurants are quite expensive. My friends love the Wynn. We've been to Vegas 6 times and the last twice we've stayed at the Signature Suites (3 Tower Blocks at the back of the MGM Grand). You can use the MGM pool as well as your own and you get a lovely, big suite for the same price as a normal room at the Bellagio. The only 'down side' is the 20 minute walk through the MGM to get to the Strip. Search the Web for an owner renting his/her suite and you'll get a better price still. I agree with "NJ Gal" that you should stay clear of Stratosphere, NY NY, Circus Circus and Luxor. I also agree with RBCal that it will be very hot in June!

Palazzo is the newest and will have the nicest room out of all your choices, IMO. It's got a great location, lots of great restaurants. I've stayed at THEHotel, and am not a huge fan, though my hubby liked it (room was very dark, imo), service not the same caliber as the Venetian/Palazzo, location stinky. I hear Bellagio's rooms are starting to get just a bit dated/worn. It happens quickly in Vegas.

I also really have enjoyed the Signature, have stayed 3 times. Great rooms.

I would also choose the Palazzo from your list. It's very new and the rooms are all suites, very nice, and I also like the casino and dining options there.

They do pump in a floral scent into the casino at the Venetian and Palazzo, but otoh, their air circulation system really does help eliminate the smoke. I stop noticing it pretty quickly once I'm in the casino, but people who are super-sensitive to smells may be bothered. You can't smell it in the rooms though.

You may want to consider the Wynn or the Encore as an even more upscale choice, and there are very few children in those properties, if peace and quiet is something you are seeking.

Thanks for getting back to me. Another question. Is the walk into the Bellagio long. Like a long driveway to get in? If you are checking in is there a special entrance? I like the location of the Bellagio. We have family staying at the Mirage and Paril. I already stayed at the Paris once when it was new and would like to try anothe place. Since it is a special occasion I would like something more upscale and the Bellagio is close.

What a pity you need to be near to Mirage, as the Four Seasons would have been an excellent choice for a special occasion, it is the most upmarket hotel in Vegas, but is south of the Mirage. Never mind, maybe next time.

Aside from the issue of distance, the Four Seasons ceded its claim when the Mandarin Oriental opened. The MO is still a bit far from the Mirage, however.

My husband and I (both in our 50s)have been to Las Vegas and have stayed at many of the hotels. We absolutely love the Wynn. Yes, it is on the far end of the strip but many of the better hotels are located there now, and the casino is not as crowded. Absolutely beautiful hotel, beautiful pool area.It's also located near the hotels that have the shows we like. We like to eat at Cafe Baba-Reba(sp?)-1/2 price drinks and tapa 3-6 Monday through THursdays- and Steakburger, and the Capitol Grille located right across the street. We also picked up wine and essentials just 1/2 block past the Wynn at a tiny strip mall. Since we've stayed and played there before I have twice gotten great deals for our hotel room. (Tip-slot play earns a lot more comps than table games unless you play hands of at least $75 a hand!)Since I've stayed and played there I no longer call reservations but ask to speak to resort marketing which is how I managed to get great rates. I'd research several hotels-they're still hurting from the economy so you might be surprised at the deals you can get.

I always choose the hotel after I decide on shows and where we'll be dining. It's best if you are a short walk from your destinations, especially in the hot weather, and a hotel connected to or very close to other nice hotels, especially with appealing/good value/affordable dining. My favorite hotels are Paris and Wynn, so last trip, we split our stay between those two.

The fragrance at Palazzo/Venetian make us want to get out of there as quickly as possible and go there only if we have to (for a show...). And, once you've walked through it, your hair, clothing, etc., absorb it and you can't get away from it.
