Best Hotel in Santa Fe & Upgrades?

Hello everyone,

I am considering spending my honeymoon in Santa Fe, New Mexico next October. We have been there before, and just fell in love.

We stayed at El Rey Inn and that was great, but for our honeymoon we want to really splurge and have the best.

I am considering the Hotel Loretto, La Posada de Santa Fe, and Inn of the Anasazi.

Which would you consider to be the most beautiful and most luxurious? Also, which have the best rooms and views? We definitely want a balcony.

Lastly, does anyone know what the chances are that if we book a room, we would be able to get a free upgrade for asking. A co-worker said her sister stayed at the Hotel Loretto for her honeymoon, and was upgraded to their Presidential Suite! Has anyone else heard of the possibilty of something like this happening?

That would be a dream - I cannot wait to be out of New York City for a while.

If you have any other suggestions, I would love to hear them!

Thank you so much for your help, and I hope you are all safe and well.

Kind Regards - Valerie

I've not stayed at La Posada or Loretto, but the In of the Anasazi is very nice. Luxury, when you're referring to southwest architecture/decor, is a relative thing, too. The Inn of the Anasazi is very nice, but in a casual southwestern way. It is virtually always the highest rated hotel in SF. In fact, it's almost always the only hotel in New Mexico on Conde Nast's Gold List.
Just for you, Valerie, I called the hotel to inquire about their 'best' room. Unfortunately, they don't have a Presidential Suite. It is 400 sq. feet, bedroom with sitting area but no partition between the two. There is a balcony.
I've heard many times of free upgrades for honeymoon couples. (Worked for us on ours in Hawaii). Even if they won't offer you the upgrade at the time of booking (wherever you might stay), be sure to ask with a big, excited smile upon checking in. How could any desk clerk with half a heart refuse? (Unless you're 74 years old with straggly gray hair and a partially toothless grin...not all honeymooners are accorded the same benefits).

I want to add a second vote for the Inn of the Anasazi. It is a beautiful hotel, with a great concierge, a lovely restaurant and luxurious surroundings. I still enjoy my bottle of the pine-scented lotion that they provide in the rooms -- it's exactly the same as the lotion at the Japanese-style spa outside of Santa Fe (someone help me remember the name!).

As a side trip, you might consider Taos. I loved it, too.

Have a great honeymoon.

First, congratulations on your wedding....Next, of your list, I've stayed only at La Posada, which has nice southwestern style rooms, good bedding, fireplaces,, etc; but the baths are rather small and dark. The spa was lovely and the restaurant very good, though

I would also recommend Bishop's Lodge, which has just finished a big renovation and now has lovely rooms, great views, plus you're out of town five minutes or so, so it just seems more private.

Lisa, I think you are thinking of Ten Thousand Waves, the wonderful Japanese style spa outside town. They had that great cedar lotion but I heard they stopped using it!/! But there is a little store near the plaza called sombria that sells it.... look for it online and you can order all you want!

IMO, definitely the La Posada. I highly recommend the spa suites.

I really liked the tiled bathrooms and the beautiful fireplace. We also had a lovely (and large)balcony. The spa offers services for couples, but be sure to book ahead. It is very quiet (if your room doesn't face the street) and the grounds are expansive. Although you're only minutes from the Plaza, you feel miles away from the ratrace. The prices in Oct. should allow you to upgrade. I believe our suite was about 40% less that time of year.

Not that you asked about it, Valerie, but I second the Bishop's Lodge. I think it's a wonderful place. They ahve a nice restaurant, horseback riding, and a great swimming pool (heated). But what I really like about it is that it's out of town. Downtown Santa Fe can get a little congested (although in October that's probably less of a problem than other times of the year.) I like to be removed from all the hub-bub. Another super place outside of town is the Rancho Encantado. It's a great setting - right smack dab in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by hills covered with junipers, mesquite and sage. They also have a great restaurant. The cedar lotion is a wonderful product made in New Mexico. They have a website: clecedar.com. They have lots of great products. And they all smell great.

The website for the cedar products is CLCEDAR.COM. not clEcedar.com
Sorry. My fingers aren't awake yet.

Thank you so much for your help and advice, and Jack, thanks for calling the hotel to ask!!

We are going to have to mull over this - I'm sure I will have more questions!
