It's interesting, I think. I was looking at hotels to stay in in KC for a romantic weekend and there's only a few I would choose. The rest are chains. Not that chains aren't nice, but I do wish KC had more boutique hotels. It's strange that we have so many great places to eat and so much to do, but not many great places to stay.

I've stayed twice and loved The Raphael, a historic "boutique" hotel. For another stay in KC, I'd probably choose it as the "best for me". But most people think "best" means the most luxurious and expensive. The Raphael doesn't fit that description at all.

The only hotel I've stayed in here (kansas city) is the Sheraton on the plaza. The hotel is just alright, but the beds are amazing. We used to go for a special treat when we were younger and we'd get chocolate popcorn from Panache and then snack on it in the room while playing board games.

The building for the new boutique hotel is just now being built, I'd guess it still has another year or so.
Patrick, somewhere I heard the Raphael was in need of an update, and I think they've either done it or are in the process. Years ago, we stayed at their sister hotel in Chicago, and it was a charming hotel as well.
If you're in KC anytime soon, I'll mention a couple of newer restaurants that really shine. Room 39 (locations on 39th Street in KCMO and also in Leawood, KS), Trezo Mare (North Kansas City), and Trezo Vino (also Leawood). All of them are just delightful. annie

I was going to mention The Raphael also, but I think it has become quite dated inside. The exterior is lovely and the location is amazing. The restaurant is quite good, too. Does anybody know anything about the President downtown? I think it just underwent extensive renovations. If I were visiting KC, though, I'd stay on the Plaza.

Downtown has actually undergone some fantastic renovations. They've put in a new power and light district that's SO COOL. We went there Saturday night for the KU v. UNC game and it was a blast. They have a over 21 only section that has many restaurants, bars and clubs. Once inside, there's a giant big screen TV and a huge plaza to watch stuff on. There are some chairs in there (it's a covered courtyard), but they were all taken. People were standing and sitting on the ground the whole game and the whole place went crazy when KU won. If anyone is in KC soon, they should definitely check it out.

I've stayed at the Raphael many times. It's a favorite. But others are correct, it is becoming dated. However, they've begun a complete remodel. Just ask for a newly refurbished room/suite. The location can't be beat. You'll love it.
