Best Hilton location/hotel in New York

Looking for recommendations/suggestions for a Hilton hotel within easy walking or subway ride to Broadway, museums, Times Square, Central Park, 9/11 Memorial, etc..

A quick search showed these hotels to be rated pretty well, but I'm not sure about location.
* Hilton Times Square
* The Hilton Club
* West 57th Street by Hilton Club
* Hilton Garden Inn (west 35th)
* Hilton Garden Inn NY/Times Square
* The Millennium Hilton
* Doubletree Suites by Hilton NYC Times Square

I've only been to NY once and it's been several years so any suggestions would be helpful.

Personally I like the Hampton Inn Chelsea on 24th St.

We have stayed twice at the Hilton Garden Inn Times Square (8th Avenue) and found it the perfect location for walking or taking public transport to the places you mention. Corner rooms are surprisingly large for NYC and they come with a sofa, microwave, fridge, and coffeemaker. There are many dining options and a supermarket nearby.

I agree with @happytrailstoyou about the Hilton Garden Inn on 8th Avenue. In terms of locations, it's in the thick of things without being directly on 42nd Street. Good, reasonably priced restaurants are one avenue away to the west, and it's close to public transit.

My next favorite location is the Hilton on west 35th. It's a convenient location near Macys.

Both the Doubletree and Hilton Times Square are right in the thick of things, so my worst nightmare but perhaps exciting for a tourist, and certainly convenient.

But even my least favorite, the Millennium Hilton, is directly across the street from the new Westfield mall and between every major subway line downtown. The downside is that it's only close to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum and nothing else. So you'd have to take the subway or a taxi to get anywhere.

I stayed here a couple of years ago with my sisters and it suited the bill perfectly. It's in a great location for easy walking just about everywhere and close enough to the theatres without being right in the heart of Times Square (not my favourite place to stay in NY).

Here's my trip report which describes the hotel:

There may be other info in that report that you'd be interested in.

Stayed at West 57th a few times, a large business hotel. Near Central Park.

Why did you not include the Hilton on 6th Avenue and 53rd St? Right around the corner from MOMA, walking distance to theatres and subways and Fifth Avenue shopping? Just curious.

That's the one I suggested. I was also curious about that.

You can't go wrong with any of them, but my personal favorites are Doubletree Suites @ Time Square, Hilton Garden Inn/TS, and Hilton TS. All are quiet once you're inside and have great rooms. H-TS rooms do not even start until after the 22nd floor, so noise is not an issue. The biggest problem I have with TS locations is tourist vibe when you walk out the door. I've always hated that, but love being so well located. It's a trade off.

Be aware that if you choose the Hilton on 6th Avenue and 53rd St. and plan to store your luggage at any point, they charge $4.00 PER PIECE!!! With hotel prices of $300 and up, that's ridiculous, and unheard of. None of the other NYC Hiltons do this. I wouldn't stay there just on principle, although it is very well-located.

Last year we stayed at the DoubleTree Suites Times Square. It is very busy but in a great location for walking to Broadway plays. If you have Hilton Honors Gold you will get the free breakfast buffet and it was great. We enjoyed looking out our window and seeing all the Times Square activity. Next time we would probably stay somewhere else-it was just too busy for us.

darlene, I think they stored our bags for free while they were getting our rooms ready but that may be because the fault was the hotel's for not having the rooms ready for us when we arrived. Are you a Hilton member? Is it possible free storage is a benefit of being a member? I know for a fact we didn't pay and we had at least 5 bags.

I am a Hilton Honors Gold member and in trying to decide where to stay on our upcoming trip, I considered 6th and 53rd. Many of the reviews on trip advisor mentioned this charge. Couldn't believe it, so I called the hotel and they do charge - honors member or not. I've not actually stayed at that Hilton, but I have stayed at the other three that I recommended.

I'm sure you are right that if it's the hotel's fault and your room isn't ready, they will comp the storage, but if you check out and want them to store while you can wander before your flight, it's $4/piece, even if one of the pieces is a tote!

Well, I sure didn't know that. I don't think it would stop me, though, if that was the hotel I wanted and the price was right. We did that whole trip on points so I don't remember the price of the room.

I wonder why it's just that Hilton that charges for bag storage. That's just crazy.

And of course if you don't need to store your luggage (or aren't concerned about the price), it's a pretty nice hotel in a great location. I personally don't like to step out the door on to TS and this is just the right distance away.

I think probably because it's a convention hotel and there are so many (too many?) requests to hold baggage for convenience sake? I like it for weekends, because it's not as crowded and I especially like the dedicated elevators for certain floors. For a very large hotel, it handles lots of visitors well. I miss the HHonors lounge that was high up with a view of Central Park - with HH check-in up there also. Those were the days. I also loved the deli on 53rd. I still crave their egg salad sandwich. We would stay at that Hilton (on points, using great AAA rates and even Priceline) for mostly Broadway trips and stop at the deli on the way back to the room after sight-seeing. Have a picnic in the room with goodies from that deli and naps before heading back out to shows. Still one of my favorite memories of NYC.

I do like the 8th and Midtown West location of the HGI for easier access to shows. My first extended visits to the city were when a friend moved to Worldwide Plaza before Times Square was Disneyfied. Still plenty of peep shows and the morning sights of "old TS" during morning walks with the pup. The neighborhood is very different now and I like being steps away from Broadway theaters but not in the craziness of what most people imagine when they think "Times Square". Also consider the Hampton Inn Times Square North which has large rooms for NYC and a perfect location (IMO) for being close to shows and subways.

If you stay at the HGI, be sure to walk down 48th (away from Broadway) and visit the lovely little community garden = Clinton Community Garden. In just a couple of blocks, 48th will feel more like a neighborhood and the community garden is a lovely, quiet respite in the city. Some of the gardeners invited in back to see the gates owners/members section of the garden, were people had get their own hands in the dirt. Just lovely. The public access section in the front is just a lovely place to sit and relax in quiet.

A plaque along that walk intrigued me and I found more information about the woman who lived there during my trip. A nice little story about the people and neighborhoods of NYC -

For a delightful dinner before a show, go to the West Bank Cafe. A Fodorite first told me about it and about a dozen others have reported back how much they've enjoyed it. Wonderful food and service near the shows but not in the craziness of TS -

I later learned it's a favorite of my friend who grew up in the UWS and I ate there twice on my last visit - once with a Fodorite and then again with friends in the city. One lives just a few blocks away and loves it. The other works not far away and a work colleague had just taken him there for brunch a couple of weeks prior. It's one of my favorite places in the city.
