You don't necessarily need a health club. Many towns have municipal pools that are superb for lap swimming. Pompano Beach and Jupiter are two that I've seen but there are many others.

More in Palm Beach County, SE florida:

I would agree that most areas have community pools and YMCA where you can buy day passes.
In fact I swim daily and go to our local community pool and YMCA on different days. Both are fantastic. (One has a 50 meter lap pool the other a 25 yards lap pool).

Ekscrunchy, I live in San Diego but the YMCA's are a national organization with lap pools in most of their locations nationwide. And most towns with sunny weather year round have community municipal pools as well.
I also do ocean open water swimming in the summer. Florida has much warmer ocean or Gulf water though.

Thanks. I thought you lived in California so wondered about your comments on Florida.
I'm here in SE Florida and unfortunately, many of the public pools in my county, Palm Beach, are closed due to budget issues. I did mention two that are open and are very good for swimming. I am fortunate to have great private pools in my condo community, as the ocean is too cold, and too rough, for extended lap swimming during the winter months when I am here.
Water in the Gulf was too cold for me to go in when I was there last March, so having a pool is important for those who like to swim laps down here.
