Best crab cakes?

Heading through Annapolis on Rt. 50/301 and going across the Bay to Delaware on 404. Where are the best crab cakes in the area? Name and locale please, first time in the area. Thanks.

Good Luck. I just left that area, did all of PA and MD. Never did find a reasonable crab cake. They average from 19-24$$ a plate....needless to say...didn't sample the fare.

We went to several places last year. Fred's probably had the best. I heard Fred's was closing (Family selling business). But I am not certain. We were disappointed with most. I guess it depends what you're looking for in the Best Crabcake. I have found that John Steven's Fells Point (Balt.) has the best for my taste.

Good Luck.

Better than decent crab cakes (I won't say THE BEST, but definitely good) can be had at what looks like a little roadside dinner just across the Bay Bridge on the north side of Route 50. The place is called "Holly's." We try to stop there every time we pass it.

Hi
sorry to say but Fred's is no more. After many years Fred's restaurant closed last year.
Now for a pretty good crab cake - try Harris' Crab House in Kent Narrows on rt 50 heading east. For one of the best crab cake dinners (not cheap tho) try "The Narrows" restaurant also at Kent Narrows.
Cantlers in Annapolis (St Margarets) has a pretty good crab cake - but actually I try crab cakes whenever I'm heading to the beach and then while I'm at the beach - sometimes you can get a really good one.

What's the skinny on Cantler's anyway? It was featured on TV not too long ago (Food Network probably) and I'm thinking of taking a trip down there during July 4 weekend. Is it worth it or will I be disappointed? Anyone familiar with Howard House in Elkton? Any good? Any recommendations?

I would go online Flex. Everybody has a different standard as to what qualifies as good. I was sent to not such great places this weekend in searching for Crab Cakes in D.C.

I just had a wonderful crabcake at Town Dock restaurant in St. Michael's,MD which is about 45 minutes away from Annapolis. We ate at Carol's Creek while in Annapolis and they had a very good crab soup and house salad which I would recommend also. Traveling by water taxi was fun . But if you have never been to St. Michael's it is a very nice day trip having charming little shops and as I said great meals at Town Dock Restaurant. Recommend the FLOUNDER FRANÇAISE and Crabcake (broiled) had just enough filler to hold lumps of crab together and was very lightly seasoned. We went for lunch. Delicious! Have fun, it is a pretty area.

The best place to have crab cakes on the Shore is the Robert Morris Inn in Oxford. Both the broiled and fried are delicious. I usually get one of each. By the way, the Old Bay french fries and onion rings are a great appetizer. At Tilghman Island, Harrison's Chesapeake Inn serves up tasty crab cakes. Though I prefer other dishes at Michael Rorke's Town Dock in St. Michael's, my wife tells me that his crab cakes are wonderful. Hemingway's, on Kent Island on the Bay, cooks up a good set of crab cakes. In Chestertown, I've had crab cakes at The Wharf, a casual place on the Chester River. The crab cakes were very tasty and as good as at more fancy restaurants.

Probably late for you for this trip, but hopefully helpful for others and for future trips, check this article in the Washington Post 7/14/02 entitled "Somewhere Over the Bay Bridge, Where to Eat After the Toll. In the Travel section if you don't want to use the link below:

Not using my real name because I know I will get flamed. I've had Crab Cakes all over this country (and I lived on the Gulf Coast for many a year) and some of the best I've had are at The Rainforest Cafe.

Go ahead and flame, but they are delicious!

Not me...I'll not criticize especially since I've never had them there. I do know, having done so ONCE, that a Marlander dare not order crab cake on the West Coast. Now...will THAT will stir a flame?

Polly,

You are right about crab cakes on the west coast, or at least in the San Diego area. They leave a lot to be desired. In fact, we're still looking for a restaurant in San Diego's North County area that consistenly serves any good seafood -- not just crab cakes.

Cantlers is one of the best I've had
(and I live in NoVa).

Also, if you cook, Dean and Deluca has one of the bes crab cake recipes I've ever made.

Hands down, best crabcakes in the Baltimore area is G&M on Hammonds Ferry Road in Linthicum. They're huge and you get 2 for $20.

The crab cakes on the West Coast are made from Dungeness crab. We were originally from the East coast and I loved the crabcakes there. Now when I return I find them too rich---it's not so much the recipe as the different type of crab.

What Debbie said about G&M. They are unreal!! No reservations accepted and it is a real joint, but there is nothing else like them.

Mark, as soon as you find a good restaurant of any type in No. county SD., please let me know. We've lived here for 10 years and are amazed that all we have nearby are fast food places and kid-friendly chain restaurants.

LOL...actually Mark, San Diego area one part of the West Coast where I made that BADDDDDDD mistake! Perhaps it is the type of crab they use, Kam, but they (west coast chefs) also use much more filler than in the Chesapeake area. I concede that it is all in what you get used to...and I'm VERY used to my Maryland style crab cakes chocked FULL of Blue Crab meat!!!

Some recommendations from who has lived in Maryland all of my life I would recommend G&M's for crab cakes and Sunset Rest. on Greenway Rd in Glen Burnie for the BEST cream of crab soup.
