Best Breakfast (NON-HOTEL) in Oahu or Spam and eggs vs. Macadamia Nut Pancakes

Here's a topic I haven't seen covered yet. Where can you find the best breakfast in Oahu. I'm talking about 'local', not buffets offered by Hotels! (blech!)

Something comparable to Liliha Bakery. And hopefully someplace that offers Macadamia Nut Banana Pancakes. Spam and eggs are okay but aren't Mac-Banana Pancakes a more traditional Hawaii breakfast?

Someone recommended Kimoz in Waimanole but I tried them this weekend and they have changed ownership! New owners apparently don't like waking up early! Argh!

Any ideas fellow Hawaiians?

Gee! No one knows any good breakfast places? I guess I'll post to my own in order to bump it up into view.

Has anyone tried those $2.99 specials the golf courses offer? Everytime I drive by Hawaii Kai I see that sign at the golf course club house beckoning.

How bout Kenekes in Waimanalo? I know the place isn't much to look at but I see they offer a $4.00 breakfast plate. Maybe I'll check it out myself and post back.

Actually, I think it was covered in the "loco moco" thread, and in this thread:
http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...=1&tid=1363966

But you can find more local kine grindz at

or

As for traditional Hawaii breakfasts: I don't know that mac-banana pancakes are necessarily traditional. Don't you like our fried rice and portuguese sausage? If you like a good deal, Harry's Diner in the Kakaako/Ward area has the best 99 cent (up to $1.99) deal. Zippy's has good deals for breakfast, as does Likelike Drive In on Keeaumoku Street. For a more upscale experience that a tourist can enjoy, the Hau Tree Lanai offers both good food and ambience with an ocean view.

Kenny's is on the Likelike.
Food Company in Kailua.
Pancake house behind Windward Mall.
Or Sunday Brunch at Haliewa Joe's in Kaneohe.

Don't know any locals who have the mac nut pancakes. Usually it is two scoops rice, fried meat and egg.

We went to a wonderful little local breakfast place in Haleiwa on the north shore. I was called Haleiwa cafe if I remember correctly. Great no-frills American breakfast! Cheap too!

Egg's N Things has the Mac pancakes although I don't think it is traditional...well maybe traditional tourist! Stop for the Malfada(?)truck on the way to Diamond Head. They are parked in the shopping center. It is a good thing to try.

Boy, that Melissa has the fullest Fodor range of vision, side-to-side, top-to-bottom, of anyone I know! She is so right, the topic has been explored before, but as always the possibilities are inexhaustible.

That pancake place in Kailua sounds like a winner! I plan to go early one Sunday with my last remaining daughter so that she can experience what appears to be a unique offering.

Marigonggong reminded me that Uptown Cafe on School Street has some wonderful variations. I'm partial to their beef stew with egg on rice.

May not be oxtail stew, but can't have everything!

Anybody found a good corn beef hash since Tom's Place closed down?

I have to second the poster about Boots & Kimo's in Kailua - they make the BEST mac. nut pancakes! They melt in your mouth, terribly delicious and sinful! It's always busy in there - it's a small little place, but worth every minute you might wait before getting seated.

Also, in one of the Ohana Hotels on Lewers Street there is a small coffee shop that serves "local" style breakfasts. I had one they called "Chef Fried Rice" which was great. It was a delicious switch from hashbrowns. It was fried rice with portugese sausage, spam, ham and sausage with the usual fried rice veggies. It was served with two eggs and two bacon strips. Of course (instead of toast) the short stack of pancakes on the side with coconut syrup were good too ....
