best beach with parking, showers, and picnicking allowed

Hi Everybody,

On Saturday, my girlfriend and I will be headed to a beach in New Jersey from Philadelphia. Since I don't go to the beach much, I am not sure where to go...

I am worried about traffic jams on a July Saturday and the availability of parking. I am looking for a beach where there would be parking available (if I have to pay that is fine), picnicking is allowed, and preferably there are showers and change rooms available. A nice boardwalk would be a benefit too.

What do you guys recommend?

Thanks!

Recommend Island Beach State Park:

But, must get there earlyas possible before parking fills up.

I agree with JohnD above. IBSP, however, has no boardwalk (unless you include the ocean-to-bay walkways that run perpendicular to the beach). Nearby Seaside Heights (you pass through it on your way to IBSP) does have a boardwalk with restaurants, shops, arcades and the like. It's reminiscent of the old Atlantic City before casinos.

Do take note of possible entry restrictions at IBSP. They literally close the gates if it becomes too full.

You have to pass through Seaside Heights to get to IBSP, so in one day you can get both worlds. Beach/picnic during the day, then boardwalk later.

Point Pleasant is another choice. The boardwalk is somewhat less tacky than Seaside. They have parking, food allowed on the beach and there are changing rooms.

Sandy Hook doesn't have a boardwalk but it's a great beach. Plenty of parking but it will be a mob scene getting out at the end of the day.
