Best beach in San Diego for family vacation ages 8-16

We will be going to San Diego next year, with Grandchildren 8 to 16 and will be renting a house. Would like to know what beach would be best to be close to for these kids. Looking at La Jolla and south.

You have a number of choices - but right in La Jolla - the Cove is a jewel - just like being transported to the Med. It not only has a lifeguard - but also a grassy area(s) up above for picnic (and rest rooms/outdoor shower to get off the sand) - and you can also walk along the path above/along the ocean - as far south as you like. https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q...+la+jolla+cove

Heading north a bit - is Torrey Pines - a great beach - and Del Mar is just north of that - another great beach - but go early to get parking - and then on up to Solano Beach and Carlsbad - also good beaches and fine for families.

To the south of La Jolla - you have Pacific Beach (probably more on the north side for families) and south of that is Mission Beach (lot of young adults/party types around there) and then across the San Diego river/further south - is Ocean Beach - funky and fun and lots of good places for inexpensive dining - including Mexican food and the SD tradition - Fish Tacos - or burgers, pizza, etc - along Newport Ave

Another great place for a house/condo - on the ocean side of Pacific Beach is the Capri - a tall condo building with incredible views (google it and also check VRBO) - and on the bay side of Pacific/Mission beaches - are private homes (VRBO, etc) - and also check out the Catamaran resort - as well as Paradise Point (formerly called Vacation Village) - just west of Sea World - were they have cottages, etc. http://www.paradisepoint.com/

From La Jolla to Torrey Pines/Del Mar - or south to Pacific/Mission/Ocean beaches is not that far (under 10 miles) - so anywhere along there would be fine for a "base camp".

My elders took me to SD for vacation when I was small and even though we stayed near Mission Bay and Ocean Beach (we were in SD five times) and had a LOT of beach days, the treat was to go to La Jolla for a day.

You might also look at Pacific Beach. Most houses near the beach that are affordable won't have pools.

Tom, how could you miss La Jolla Shores? IMO, best beach in La Jolla. I'm not a big fan of the Cove for going to the beach. Also has a grassy area, and even an actual parking lot, although it gets filled up early.

la jolla shores is worth looking at. your wording suggests more then 2 grandchildren. for that reason, i would look at capri by the sea in pacific beach. it's right on the boardwalk and close to a lot of restaurants. some of the group could stay "at home" if they wanted while others might want to crise the boardwalk or go to the beach. places close by to rent bides, blades, boogy boards. the units have kitchens which comes in handy with kids. la jolla is lovely and i'd visit but with kids, i'd rather stay in the pacific/mission beach area.
