Bemidji or North Shore/Gunflint Trail

I am interested in an area where there are great scenic drives and interesting things to do. Also, I am interested in homey, in-expensive lodging in a cottage or cabin/inn.
I do not fish. I like to take pictures and soak up the scenery on scenic drives and relax. A couple of years ago we drove up to Duluth and we enjoyed the area but did not have time to spend for the North Shore drive.

WE like the North Shore very much and return there often. It is very beautiful and lots of photo spots. When you go up from Duluth you can stop in the Two Harbors Area and they have an interesting harbor area and then stop at Gooseberry Falls and hike along the falls. We especially like Split Rock Lighthouse which is a very interesting restored lighthouse and houses. Also a gorgeous setting. There are lots of other neat photo ops and places to hike and enjoy the views of Lake Superior. Probably our favorite place is Grand Marais. Is is such a pretty town right on Lake Superior and lots of shops and restaurants and places to hike. Very nice and friendly people also. It is the start of the Gunflint Trail and you can drive up into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area for over 60miles from there. There are many lodges and resorts up the trail on beautiful lakes and you can stay at places which are very upscale or others which are much less expensive. G.M. also has quite a few hotels and motels and cabins and the like as does the surrounding area and you can find all price ranges and amenities. While driving up the shore you might want to stop at the following restaurants which we enjoy - Betty's Pies (outside Two Harbors), Rustic Inn in CAstle Danger (between Two Harbors and Silver Bay), Tracks (up by the ski hill in Lutsen) and Sven & Ole's for Pizza in G.M. For a wonderful and special dinner don't miss Gunflint Lodge. It is upscle and excellent. There are many more great places and think you'd have a good time. We have also been to the Bemidji area and had fun but liked being along Lake Superior and just liked the North Shore better. You can also go up to Thunder Bay, Ontario which is only about 75 miles from Grand Marais.

When I first read of the North Shore Drive, the brochure said "one of the most scenic drives in America." My first thought was "too bad it'll be nowhere near as good as Hiway One in California." I now consider the two hiways about equal in scenery. If you like scenery, do NOT skip the North Shore Drive.

Mike,

Absolutely do not miss the North Shore drive of Lake Superior. It is definitely one of the most scenic drives in the US. Comparing it to the Bemidji area is ike comparing the touristy scene outside of Mount Rushmore to Yellowstone Park...there is no comparison. Bemidji area has lots of little touristy craft shops etc but, especially if you do not fish, there is nothing special there. Also, the Superior hiking trail along the North Shore is great.

Are you truly limited to Bemidji and the NorShor? Give a thought to Rainy Lake. There are several homey cabin-type lodging potentials and if you have a boat, the scenery is fabulous. Blacklock stuff. Try International Falls and their chamber page for more info. We'd love to have you!

If you do the North Shore drive, consider an overnight stop at the Two Harbors Lighthouse. www.lighthousebb.org.

We did it last year, and it was superb. There are three rooms for rent in the lighthouse, and it's run by the Lake County Historical Society. The only folks on site at night are those staying there. There's also a nifty bridge off a Great Lakes steamer that I'd love to be in when a storm hit!
