beaches in July/August
I can't decide where to go end of July, early August. I want good beaches for swimming. My travel partner gets bored easily so the destination should have more than beaches. Anywhere on East Coast or Gulf Coast would be great.
I saw postings on New Orleans -- loved it and would consider the coast gulf coast nearby but wouldn't it be terribly hot and humid?
Please help!! We like road trips too. Oh, we're single so don't want family-focused places.
Thanks in advance for your help,
ELizabeth

Haven't been to the beaches near NO, but NP itself is VERY hot & steamy in July, August. My friends who live in NO go to Destin, Fla. on vacation. I've never been so don't know about activities.
If you really mean "anywhere", I'd suggest Nantucket (great beaches, wonderful history/sightseeing) or Hamptons/Montauk on eastern Long Island, NY- great beaches, some history & charm, shopping, restaurants.

elizacats, check out this web site:
www.beachesofsouthwalton.com
This is in the N.W. panhandle of Fl and has awesome beaches. Blue Mountain, Grayton, Seagrove, Seaside and the newest is Watercolor. Water is warm and emerald green, white sand w/ dunes. Rent a kayak, fish
inland or deep sea on a charter boat,
take a moonlight sail, rent a catamaran, bike ride on the 17mile
bike trail. Many golf courses, wonderful restaurants and an upscale outlet mall. No chain fast food or hotels on scenic Hwy 30A. Plan your days on or near the water and it is very pleasant. The beaches from Pensacola to St. George Island are quite nice. Destin is all high rise
and traffic. Panama City is tacky and
very family oriented. Hwy 30 A has been carefully planned and is still a
super nice beach. Check out a beach side condo at the Inn at Blue Mountain or call one of the realty companies for one of the many rentals in the area. New Orleans is
terribly miserable that time of year w/
heat and humidity.

Beachvan, the information you provided is great, thanks!
We're going to Navarre Beach for two weeks in April, 2004. There's about 30 of us heading down from upstate NY, and I'm the "planner." If anything/one is unhappy, the "blame" will be on me!!
Would you happen to have any additional information on this particular area?

Sorry, not terribly familiar w/ Navarre, except to recommend a trip into Pensacola for antiquing and some of the historical sites. There are some jazz bars and restaurants, also. Do
a search on Pensacola for more entertainment as Navarre is an island that is basically about beaches, which are
absolutely beautiful and I do not think the traffic and crowds are as bad as Destin. My friend is a volunteer ranger at the National Seashore in Gulf Breeze and thinks it is a must see for all the old liveoaks and naval history. Should be a great reunion.
