B&B's in Anchorage and Seward

Does anyone have recommendations for comfy B&B's that you have stayed in within the past year in Anchorage and Seward areas? Prefer not too primative, but nice view, at a reasonable price for 2 adults.
Thanks.

It's not exactly a B&B, but it's one I would stay at over and over again.
The Harborview Inn in Seward have a lovely off-property duplex with beautiful views of the bay. It is beautifully decorated and a lovely place to stay.

Thank you for your reply. I will check it out on-line.
What are your favorite things to do in the Seward area?
We have 7 days in the Anchorage area and plan to spend several days in the Seward area.

We stayed in Seward and outside of ANchorage last August after a cruise. If you do not go into Anchorage city area you will not miss a thing. It is just a city like anywhere. The Kenai Peninsula is great. I would stay anywhere there before Anchorage. Take a day cruise out of Seward for close up looks at glaciers, otters, sea lions, whales. Even after our 7 day cruise from Vancouver, it was great Take the 8 hour otu with lunch and a picnic dinner. Or, since you have the time, I would go to Denali. We missed Denali because of time, and I regret it. I will check the B&B we stayed at outside of Alaska. We went out at 9:30 Pm and went moose watching and saw a family of 3 that crossed right in front of our car on a dirt road. Awesome. The Seward B&B was ok but not great. It was right across the street from the water at the most southern end of Seward. You will have a great time no matter what you do. Beautiful country.

Check out a wonderful place in a converted church right in Anchorage run by two lovely gay ladies--I believe it is called 'Inn the Park'. Rooms are all different, smallish, but the family style breakfasts are excellent! Very well priced, too.

I suggest you be on the "move" and NOT spend your time in Anchorage thinking you will do some "day trips". Distances are vast and you would best be to consider a route with a few days in locations. Are you not interested in Denali Park= usually a top attraction for most. A good routing is to spend at least 2 nights in that area and an ovenight in Talkeetna. As for B&B's, my favorites in Anchorage is Teddy Bear House, Chickadee and Alaska Walkabout, great deals. My absolute favorite in Seward is Morning Calm and will NEVER recommend the filthy Ocean Front.

Thanks again. DQ, I am still plugging away at this. We see that the loads are good, so took a chance and reserved some hotels and car rental. I don't know what to do in the middle. Prince William cruise or Denali shuttle,?? I am befuddled. I will keep reading the talk site. Here is what I have thus far. I will check out the B&B's you recommended for Seward and Anch.
1.& 2. 6/26 &2/27 - 2 nights at the Hawthorn Suites in ANC using Toursaver as we want to spend time in Anchorage in spite of some people saying to blow it off. Plan to see Alaska Native HC, Art & History Museum, Trolley around town, Aviation Museum, shops, walk in the park, etc.
3. June 28 Drive south to Boggs Center, Portage Glacier, Girdwood area, Tram?, Seward Seal Life Center. Overnight in same place 2 nights.
4. June 29 FW Fjord cruise
5. June 30 Not sure what to do here...Homer, PW Cruise or on up to Talkeetna
6. July 1 Talkeetna flight around McKinley, Maybe into Denali State Park Shuttle. ??
7. July 2 Drive back to Anc.2 nights at Inlet Tower & Suites
8. July 3 Leisurely day in ANC before flying home on July 4.
What do you think?

We stayed at the Sleeping Lady B&B. Nice view and walkable to park and restaurants, beautiful new home constructed with love by the owners. Best breakfast in Anchorage (or so we were told - it was delicious).

The Sleeping Lady looks gorgeous! What happend to the days when B&B's were half the price of a hotel!! Yikes.
The reason I am shying away from Denali is the travel distance...still thinking about it.

We have stayed at Teddy's Inn the Woods just outside of Moose two times and highly recommend it.

The chalet has a bedroom with a queen size bed, a lovely bathroom, a full kitchen (stove with oven, microwave, refrigerator, utensils, cutlery, and dishes), and a living area with comfortable furniture. Four additional people can sleep in the living room; beds are built into the walls.

The views from either of the two balconies are incredible. There is no television but Teddy will supply a portable tv with vcr. We did not miss having a tv.

Teddy serves the most amazing breadfasts every morning. She brings fresh juice, home-baked rolls or muffins, and fresh fruit. One morning she served an egg dish with bacon. When you check in, she greets you with home-baked cookies.

The location was great for us because we spent part of our time in Seward and part of our time closer to Cooper Landing and the Russian River.

Teddy has a website. I'll post it later. You can also get it by searching either the Moose or Seward Chamber of Commerce.

The cost is around $125 per night.

We would definitely stay there again!

The website for Teddy's Inn the Woods is http://seward.net/teddys/

The cost is only $120. Be sure to look at the photos posted on the website.

Teddy's is listed in Fodors 2005 Alaska guide.

If you decide to go to Homer, figure about a 4 hour drive from Seward. The Pratt Museum is wonderful. You will be in Alaska when the wildflowers are wonderful. If you decide not to go to Talkeetna, you can take a short flight over a glacier - it won't be anything like McKinley but seeing incredible scenery from the air is great. If you like outdoor craft fairs and music, the Forest Fair in Girdwood starts July 1. It could also be a day trip from Anchorage since it runs thru the weekend. We overnighted in Whittier which I wouldn't recommend. Find something in Girdwood if you are driving up from Homer. Homer to Anchorage is about 5 hours, just stopping for the fair in Girdwood would add several hours. There's quite a variety of food vendors. You can do a google search to see pictures of past fairs. Independence Mine could also be a day trip from Anchorage but remember Hatcher Pass doesn't open until July 4 or thereabouts. You'll have to get to the Mine from the Palmer side. We stayed at the Alaska Garden Gate B&B in Palmer and highly recommend it.

Homer is more than a day trip, at least 2 nights in my opinion. Also Denali Park requires the same- 2 nights. For clairfication the STATE park and national Park are 2 DIFFERENT locations. Several state parks, only one national and that is where the shuttle buses run from. You need a copy of THE MILEPOST, be sure to get one. So

Just got back from a wonderful 11-day trip to AK. Will post a trip report when the laundry is done, but in the meantime:

In Seward, would recommend Alaska's Treehouse B&B. We had the suite (family of 4), and it and location were charming (in woods with peaks peeking through from hot tub). Teddy's I hear is also lovely but significantly farther from Seward. Definitely take a day cruise (we took the NW Fjords trip and highly recommend it). Also SeaLife Center and walk to Exit Glacier.

In Anchorage we stayed at Your Home Away from Home B&B for one night ($100). No view, as it's just a house in a neighborhood in Anchorage, but the owner is quite nice, and we were just looking for a place to stay for a night (and the price was right).

Definitely think a trip to Denali NP is worth it, especially if you're going as far as Talkeetna. You could easily take a day out of your Anchorage visit and not miss it. The 1/2 hour we spent watching a mama grizzly and cub were worth the drive alone, but there's plenty more to make the trip worth it.

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. We called to late for most of the suggestions, but we did stay at 2 B&B's I booked before leaving. The best was Soo's B&B in Seward. It is in walking distance of the docks and Soo is full of helpful information. She has a beautiful 3 year old house with lots of wood and stained glass, as well as another older building across the street. Her breakfasts were delicious and plentiful. I highly recommend this B&B.
The second B&B was the Big Bear B&B in Anchorage. Carol is a wealth of knowledge as she and her family have lived here for 40 years or more. Her home is like a museum, with Alaska stuff everywhere. It is in a changing neighborhood, which was a concern at first. It was OK. The antique furnishings in the bedrooms, baths, etc. were spotlessly clean. Her breakfast was excellent and featured handpicked berries, waffles, reindeer sausage, etc. (much like Soo's). She suggested a restaurant in the area, Nobles, that I probably would not go to again. The food was OK but the view out the window of the riff raff on the street corner sort of put us off.

We just got back from our trip and stayed at Kingsview B & B in Anchorage. It was fabulous! It is about a 10 minute drive from downtown and a beautiful and peaceful home. The rooms were huge and breakfast was great. We saw moose each morning as we drove down the road. Hosts were really helpful and have lived in alaska for over 20 years.

We're also looking for a B & B in Seward.

The Treehouse is already full for our dates.
Gecklips, I looked at Soo's online. The location looks good and you said the food was very good.
It is quiet....is it clean?

Thanks, it sounds like you had a great trip.

Hi Sandy49. Yes, Soo's is SPOTLESS!!! it is also off the main drag and very quiet. They are building a new house on the corner, so if you might hear construction noise if you sleep past 9 a.m. She is about 4 blocks from the marina where you can go to eat at Ray's, or other restaurants, snack places, etc. That is also where you catch the Fjord cruises, watch the halibut catches being weighed in between 5 and 6:30 pm, etc. The room we stayed in was a king size bed and very nice private bath. The house is 3 years old and has bamboo floors, beautiful stained glass over the lower windows in the living room and dining room and great views of the mountains from the upper half of the windows. Soo is a Korean lady who has her sister and brother-in-law helping her this summer. She will do your laundry, drive you to the dock for the morning cruise, and fixes a fantastic breakfast of waffles, reindeer sausage, home made blueberry jelly, egg casseroles, etc. Please observe the Alaskan custom of removing you r shoes when entering her home. She has slippers for you to use or just run around in your socks. The living room is very nice and comfy to relax in. She also has discounts to various places in town. We used the Toursaver 2 for 1 coupon for the Sealife Center. You would need to drive to the end of the street about 6 or 7 blocks to get there. Be sure to watch the COOL movie...it is narrated by a 5 year old Alaskan boy and it was fantanstic!! We bought a copy of it. Seward is a fun little town and Soo is a gracious hostess. Enjoy!

Hi Geckolips
Thanks for the info about Soo's in Seward. That is not a B&B that I have heard mentioned on the board before, sounds like you enjoyed it very much.
I called her and she sounds very nice.

Thanks again, it is always good to hear from someone that has actually been there.
