We've gotten good rates using Priceline.

When are you coming and what do you mean by cheap? Weekkends from May through Oct are typically expensive since all of the rental agencies sell out to people going to beach or country houses.

Priceline is probably the best choice - if they have availability. If they don;t assume $100 a day and up - or try rent-a-wreck.

A lot of people head out of the city and rent nearby in the direction they're headed.

There are no cheap car rentals in the NYC area. The cheapest option (if you are going to New England) is to take the train to New Haven and rent there. It's about half the price of renting in Manhattan.

The cheapest option if you are going north is to take Metro North to North White Plains and rent from Hertz, which is directly across the street from the train station (but they ALWAYS sell out on weekends, whether summer or not).

I've been told that it's generally cheaper to go to one of the three area airports and rent there but you have to figure in the cost of the trip to get there (it's not cheap).

Hertz claims $79 per day rentals in Manhattan, but that's over $100 per day.

If it's NOT summer, then you can get a deal from Priceline if you rent during the week. Just make sure you get a reservation for a car as far in advance as possible.

I just went through the process of reserving a car for NYC. As you can see in my other post, I found that Dollar had the best rate in Manhattan, though it had some poor reviews online. I ended up going through Priceline and getting a car at the Newark airport. However, another poster suggested using a discount code and I found that Costco offers deals through Avis, Alamo and a few other places (use the Travel link from the Costco website) and my professional association offered discounts with Hertz. If you have any membership discounts (Costco, AAA, professional memberships, etc.), it would be worth checking into.
