What to do if it is raining or unsettling weather in the area and down the coast US 1 . We will be their third week of July.

In Trenton there is a large barn filled with antique dealers - we had fun poking around. I believe its on the main raod from Ellsworth. Ellsworth has cute shops too, including an LL Bean outlet. its not as cool as the original store in Freeport but its worth a look.

Thanks bennnie - we're actually staying in Ellsworth so this should work out well. We've been told sometimes the fog comes in and becomes very limiting as to how far you can go. We're hoping to spend most of our 2 days in Acadia. Did you spend time there, as well?

We were there last June for a week and had several rainy days. We also went to the antique stores & even found a little old bowling alley with candlestick bowling. We had a GPS with us and found it under recreation.

One afternoon it was just misty, so we hiked around Jordan Pond in our rain jackets, then went to the Jordan Pond House for pop-overs and hot tea.

We were Bar Harbor a few years back and were totally fogged in for several days. We spent some time in Trenton and also drove inland to Blue Hill which is very charming town.

google maps says it's 39 minutes via 1A to Bangor. We enjoyed the Cole Transporation Museum which is more about logging and work vehicles and not classic cars like other museums, very different from Owls Head Transportation Museum. Good grub at Dysart's truck stop.

It's 45 minutes to the Big Chicken Barn antiques and books on Rt 1 near Ellsworth. First floor antiques. Second floor used books, magazines, etc.

Traditional rainy day at the cottage activity is to work on a jigsaw puzzle.

Also agree with exploring the Blue Hill area.

Mattpmg - we just booked our 3rd week long vacation in Acadia - staying in Bar Harbor for the first time. We absolutely love the place. Jordan Pond, Schoodic Pennisula, the Bubbles, candlepin bowling, kayaking, whale watches - its all good.

Thanks so much everyone - great suggestions. At least we know there will be something else to do. When it's foggy, does that mean we can't bike, hike Acadia?

You can still hike and bike with fog. And personally I love being near the ocean when its foggy - its kind of romantic in a Victorian novel sort of way.
