Bar Harbor to Portland - where to stop for a night?

After 5 nights in Bar Harbor we will head back to Portland and want to take our time enjoying the sights, sounds and eats along along/off Hwy 1. We will be leaving Bar Harbor early Friday so we'll have all day Friday and most of Saturday to visit the towns along the way. Since we'll just need to room for a good night's sleep we really don't need fancy - just clean, convenient and comfortable. Where's a good stopping point for the night?

I'm going to vote for Rockland area but it depends on where you would like to spend most of your time. Rockland has the Farnsworth Art Museum and nearby is the Owls Head Transportation Museum and easy hike to Owls Head light. There's a nice winery in Rockland you can visit for a tasting. And of course, you could have a lobster lunch at Waterman's Beach. It's a picnic table lobster shack type of place.

Rockland is indeed nice. You might think about Camden, too. It's got a gorgeous harbor, some decent restaurants, or you can take a sailing cruise from there. You could hike Mt.Battie (about an hour hike, if you're into hiking) which has a lovely view of the harbor.

Thanks for your replies. Both places look like great stops so it will probably come down to where we can find the best lodging. Either way we will be sure to see highlights of both towns.

Most of the "sights and sounds" are not along Route 1, you have to get off route 1 and meander down the peninsulas 20 minutes or so each way. Rockland/Camden works well because it is right on route 1. High Tide Inn, Glen Cove Inn, Ledges By the Bay, Mt. Battie Motel.
