Trip Ideas
People will debate this one, but you have two choices:
1. Route 3 to Brewer (just south of Bangor) and then 95 south to Augusta.
2. Route 1 from Ellsworth south to Belfast; Route 3 from Belfast to Augusta. Both routes are 50 mph most of the way and you shouldn't hit much traffic depending on what day of the week you're traveling.
Either way, your biggest jam up will be approaching Ellsworth from MDI. Route #2 takes you across the relatively new Penobscot Narrows bridge in Bucksport, which is spectacular and includes an observation tower if you're not afraid of heights. (Google it for specifics on visiting the tower and adjacent Fort Knox.)
Thanks a lot. My DH and I can't agree. Are both routes about the same amount of time?
Yes, I'm sorry I wasn't clear on that but I really think they are about the same amount of time.
