Heading to Maine (Acadia area) with two kids (13 & 9) and looking for a cottage on the water and mom not having to cook and clean every night. Any suggestions? The web is overwhelming with all sorts of choices. Would love to hear from someone who has stayed in a clean, convenient spot....

I'm sorry that I can't give a specific cottage recommendation. If you post info on where some cottage choices are located we could comment on convenience. There are so many restaurants on MDI, all kinds of food and price ranges, that I'm sure you won't have to cook every night. For the 'tweens' you might want to look up the routes and schedule for the Island Explorer. They are free buses and you'll find info on the Acadia National Park website. If your cottage is on one of the many routes the kids might enjoy taking it into Bar Harbor for ice cream or something. Its really safe and as long as its not too late or too long a ride I wouldn't worry about it. Or they could just do it one way and get the feeling of some freedom. (Of course this all depends on where you're from and how much freedom their used to!)
Sorry I can't be more specific but I know your kids will love that area - tons to do and see. FYI - I wouldn't stay off the island though, unless you really want uncrowded and unspoiled, and maybe a little lonely!
We stayed at the Atlantic Oaks last summer. It is a nice property in a quiet area. We stayed in the house on the property because there were 6 of us, but the inn looked cute with nice water views. Downtown Bar Harbor is a quick drive, and they also have regular shuttles from the hotel. The breakfast buffet was especially nice.
Havana Restaurant and Thurston's Lobster Pound were our favorite meals. Acadia is beautiful!! We also did a whale watching cruise which was fun, but we had really rough waters that day so if they advise about that, believe it and take dramamine before boarding!
