Badlands & Passion Play in 1 day?

We're trying to coordinate our several day stay-over in the Rapid City area and wondered if it's possible to drive to the Badlands in the morning (from Rapid City) and spend most of the day in that area, and make it back to Spearfish in time for the Passion Play at 8:00?

Or would it be better to spend the day around Custer State Park (Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Needles Hwy., etc.) and then go to the play in Spearfish? We noticed that the play is only on Sun., Tue. & Thur.
