bad traffic on 476 in PA memorial day weekend

We've never tried this route before - heading from Philly up 476 to new york for memorial day weekend. We aren't able to leave philly until around 2 pm on Saturday. Any thoughts on whether the traffic will be bad at that time?

Coming home Monday around 7 pm - is that late enough to avoid most of the return traffic, or should we come home even later?

Gave up on Fredericksburg?

Holiday traffic coming home depends a great deal on the weather: if it is terrible, everyone leaves early, and traffic peaks early. If it is great, everyone stays as long as possible and the traffic peaks later.

Are you thinking about NYC/Westchester/LI or upstate?

If I were YOU I would use my phone's GPS to TELL ME where the traffic is "bad" and then if it is that much of an issue for you I would also use it to re-route me around it.

Nobody knows how bad the traffic is going to be and they also don't know if there will be any accidents making the already bad traffic even worse.

If you have an iPad or cell that gets traffic, you can download WAZE (a free app) that gives pretty much real time info on traffic, routes etc.

As noted above, it depends on WHERE in New York you are headed for. There's one "shortcut" I take when I go from Philly to Long Island or NYC, a different one when I go to Hudson River area, and I might take I-476 if headed to central or western NY.

Monday at 7pm on Memorial Day Weekend will be jammed no matter where you are. I'd wait as long as I dared -- but even that might not work, because everyone else might do the same thing!

Ackislander - still debating between the two! Would prefer to head to Virginia, but am concerned the traffic situation might be worse there. But not sure if I would hit traffic coming out of Philly heading to the Poconos!

The destination in NY state would be the Finger Lakes.

If some think that traffic will still be bad from 7-11 pm....that makes me nervous for either destination!

It's a holiday weekend. There is going to be traffic wherever you go. Either you relax and just wait in line with the other cars, or drive yourself crazy trying to figure out something that probably won't work anyway.
I hope you have a great time wherever you decide to go.

Just a guess, based on experience:

Traffic on 476 at 2 o'clock on Saturday of Mem. Day weekend will be moderate.

Traffic anywhere on Mon. at 7 will be terrible.
