We'll be staying in Kahuku Oahu for 5 nights in October and would welcome some suggestions for hikes, snorkeling, touring or just getting out into the less traveled areas. I'd also like a recommendation for one good book that would include trail maps. We've never been to Oahu before so any ideas/suggestions would be great.
thanks...

You are already out in one of the less congested areas of Oahu - and from there over to Haliewa - along the fabled North Shore - there are a lot of beaches and the Waimea Valley Park is also fun to explore. http://www.hawaiiweb.com/waimea-valley-adventure-park-o-ahu.html
For snorkeling - find a nice bay - on a calm day (but do ask about local conditions) - with hopefully a couple rocks - such as Chinaman's hat - toward Kailua - if you are good swimmers - as it's out a little ways http://www.to-hawaii.com/oahu/attractions/chinamanshat.php - but there is nothing better than getting down to Hanauma Bay - the earlier in the day the better - to not only beat the crowds but also when the watter is calmer/clearer before the waves and wind might pick up.
Have a ton of books on Hawaii - and suggest you go to your local library/bookstore to check them out. Had one - Hiking Hawaii's Secret trails or some such - but can't dig it out at the moment.
And, you can get a good map when you arrive at the airport - in one of the many tourist mags. They have foldouts for the various parts of the island.
