Thinking about planning a friends bachelorette party in memphis. We are all about 30 yrs old, from NYC, and looking for something a little different. We definitely want to go out and do some partying, but we have done the Vegas thing already and I think south beach is too 'clubby' for my friend. Would Memphis be a good choice? I know that there are a bunch of bars on Beale street - is it a fun scene for a bunch of 30 yr old girls?

I would actually go for Nashville over Memphis for a bachelorette party--Beale St. is fun, but there's a bigger range of bars, clubs, restaurants, etc. in Nashville. Also, more choices for nicer hotels.
I'll respectfully disagree with Gellers and go to Memphis, a city I've spent a lot of time in over the last 20 years. I would like to know why you picked Memphis from NYC? How long do plan to spend there? What are you looking to do during the day?
We have been to tons of bachelorette parties in NYC, plus we can go out here all the time. We want to do something different, see a difference scene - We'd probably spend a long weekend, maybe 3 nights...I have just heard that Memphis was a fun place, although it seems like it's surprising difficult to get there from NYC!....but we figured we'd just bum around during the day, walk around, eat some bbq....What are the bars and clubs like in Nashville?
Even though they're only about 3 hours away by car, I would say Nashville is primarily country music bars and Memphis is more blues. You're not going to get better BBQ than in Memphis, ribs, pork shoulder, chicken, even BBQ pizza, spaghetti, cornish game hens, etc. There's also a nice fine dining scene and several attractions and museums.
Most of the "touristy" places in Nashville are country, that's true, but if you're looking for something else we have that too. It all depends on what you're looking for. If you want to dance/drink/wear your cowboy boots, try the honky tonks on Lower Broadway or Second Avenue. There are other bars and clubs that will have live pop, rock, or whatever else. And there is a B.B. King's on Second, if you want some blues. I haven't lived in Memphis, so can't compare Nashville to there, but I have plenty of mid-20s/early 30s girlfriends who enjoy the Nashville nightlife! Plus there's lots to do during the day too, depending on what you're interested in and when you're traveling.
Okay, I went to school in Memphis and Nashville and I agree that I'd go with Memphis for a girls' weekend. However, you are correct that it is difficult (and expensive) to get to from NYC. So, how about another option? New Orleans. You can probably get a direct flight, lots of hotel options in the French Quarter, great food, good music, lots of drinks, things to see during the day and they need your $$.
Continental has direct flights to Memphis from Newark.
I fly Northwest all the time because Memphis is a hub and I just checked and they have several direct flights from Newark to Memphis.
Also, you may not be thinking about it but as hokey as going to Graceland sounds, it's one of those things that's worth doing at least once in your life. It's fun in a kitchy sort of way.
A few years ago, a friend of mine had her bachelorette party in Memphis. Some of the girls stayed at the Hampton Inn at Peabody Place and others at the Doubletree. Both are great Beale St. locations. We hit Silky O'Sullivan's, Pat O'Brien's and of course BB Kings. It was June, which makes it more fun because the patios were open. Another option might be City Walk at Universal Studios, FL. Did a girl's long weekend there. We stayed at Hard Rock, hit the bars at City Walk, shopped, drove to the beach, and also hit Pleasure Island at Downtown Disney. I preferred this trip because there was more to do but Memphis was also a great time.
thanks everyone for your suggestions!!!
