B & B in Newport, RI less than $100/night?

Does anyone know of a B&B for less than $100/night in Newport?

Also, what would you recommend to do during a weekend stay?

Thanks for your help!

Well, I certainly are not aware of any. If you book far enough in advance, you'd be way lucky to stay at the Motel 6 (dingy and dirty but in your price range). Otherwise, you may be able to find something (gosh knows what) in nearby Middleton. The rates are just a bit higher than your budget. One can only wonder if you have no idea what to do while there why you're going there? But most folks go for touring the positively splendid mansions, enjoying the fine, and somethimes harborshide, dining, and talking a stroll along the Cliff Walk. Just a note - we happened along without reservations one weekend and the only room we could find (for $169) was a pitifully shabby room.

Caryn, what time of year do you plan to visit Newport? This makes a big difference in room rates. The only thing I can think of is to try the Viking Hotel as I have noticed they have special rates, but it all depends upon what time of year. I know there is a central reservation service for many of the B&B's but I do not have that right now. Try an internet search and you may find something.

Caryn,
Okay, I hate when people say to search the internet without providing results, so I did a Yahoo search on Newport RI and found a specific B&B site:
http://www.bbnewport.com/
I did not, however, do a search for your price range since I don't know any of your specifics. You should be able to tell very quickly if they will be able to help you by filling out their form. Good luck and have a nice visit.

Caryn,
Ann is absolutely right in saying that the time of year makes all the difference. I tried to find a room in Newport this past August, and couldn't find anything for less than $200 a night. Everyone in Newport that I spoke to said it would be virtually impossible at that time of year to find anything. All suggested staying outside of Newport, but have already done that and it takes all of the fun out of it. So, we didn't go. Oh well, can;t see paying that much for a weekend.

I realized after I posted the message that I forgot to say when we planned on going (mid November for a weekend). I found lots of B&B listings on the web but they were all a lot over $100 and I found no sites where it was possible to do a search by price. That is why I posted a question here.

Ralph, I am thinking of going to Newport b/c I've been just about everywhere else you could think of within a day's drive of NYC and heard that Newport is beautiful. Believe me, I am not a naive traveler and always do my homework. I would not show up in Newport without any ideas about what to do. One way to get ideas is to ask people on this forum, which I did.

Hi Caryn,
There is a Courtyard by Marriott in Middletown which is the next town to Newport. Rooms there start at about $55 per nite. This property is only a few years old. I have had friends stay there when they have come to visit and they were pleased with it. You will be only about 1 mile from the Newport line so it's not a big problem.
The sights to see include: a walk on the Cliff Walk, driving or biking or walking on Ocean Drive, the mansions (Hammersmith Farm, the Breakers, Marble House and many others) and shops of Bellevue Ave, the restaurants and shops on Thames Street, boat tours if the weather is decent, the Tennis Hall of Fame, the Jai Alai fronton, of course the beaches but it will be too cold!!

Good luck and I hope you enjoy RI!!

I stayed at "The Inn at Newport Beach" for $ 120/night which included a free continental breakfast. It is located about 1 mile south of "Downtown". 1/4 mile from the Cliff Walk. It was a nice hotel, nothing special, but clean and friendly service. I highly recommend you tour the Breakers and Marble House - unbelievable! Email me at the above address I will get the Hotel's phone number and email it to you, as I do not have it with me currently.

Hi Caryn!
Been to Newport a dozen times and can tell you about two lovley B.B. there in your price range. First is called the The Farragut Inn. Very charming colonial atmosphere. There is free parking, close to the harborfront, includes full breakfast and tea/coffee all day. Ask for room 5 or the first room on left upon entering(forgot the #) but these rooms are very nice and working fireplaces. The fee is about 90.00 Sun.-Thurs. and goes up to 125.00 on a Sat. They do have cheaper rooms yet but they are very small and dark. Also try the Mill Street Inn. Its an old restored Grist Mill with fantastic package deals. Not charming like the Farragut but they give you 2 mansion tours, 2 nights, wine, 60.00 dinner voucher at a choice of restaurants, cont. break and tea/coffee and snacks all day for about 219.00 for the whole weekend! Was just there Christmas week and it ran us 179.00 for that package but we went mid-week. There is one more place worth mentioning and that is the Inntowne Inn on Mary St. Great location, rooms are done in period repro. and includes cont. plus tea in the afternoon for about 199.00 for the weekend. If you need anymore info. you can e-mail me about dining and things to do. Dont believe anyone either, the best time for Newport is in the Fall and Winter!

It's close at $125.00 a night. Room in small shingled cape with pond view by the Atlantic. Owner will use her car and play tour guide for a modest amount. Truly charming.
