Aztec National Memorial
My trip to New Mexico and Colorado is coming up and we are excited! I am considering making a stop at the Aztec National Memorial on the way to Durango from Abq. with 4 boys ages 8-12. Would this be something they would enjoy as a break in our driving and to learn something? Is it at all like Mesa Verde? We will be going to Mesa Verde next week.
The other option I have is to stop at Bandelier and drive to Durango from Santa Fe on 84 to Pagosa Springs, but it looks like Aztec would be an easier stop? Any recommendations on these 2 sites?
Thank you!

Aztec was my least favorite of the ruins. Bandelier will be more fun because the boys will be able to climb short ladders to get up to see the ruins. Mesa Verde is IMHO the best place to see all kinds of ruins. Chaco Canyon is my second favorite. Chaco is also on your way, but it's pretty far out of your way on a dirt road and would be hard to make Durango the same day.

I agree that Bandelier is more interesting, but If you want a short break right on the way to Durango, Aztec would make for a good place to stop for a short visit. The kiva there is beautiful, has been reconstructed.
If you do go to more than a couple NPs it will pay to get the park pass, good for a year for all the NP, NMs.
Have a load of fun

Stopping in Aztec is pretty simple, won't take much time to stop and see and take a break BUT I don't know that it is worth the stop, the fee and the time. I think your boys would find it pretty boring. There is an A&W drive-in where you turn to go to Aztec Ruins, worth a stop. Nothing like a Root Beer float on a hot day to soothe parched throats and nerves.

You decide if it is worth it to you.
