Ayres Hotel in Seal Beach, CA
Has anyone stayed here and is it nice? The website looks very nice. Still trying to find a place to stay while my daughter has swim meets in Long Beach, CA for three days over Spring Break.
Any nice places to eat, shop, etc. here? Any info appreciated. Thanks! ***kim***

I've stayed there several times and find it to be very comfortable. They often fill up, so be sure to reserve in advance.
The building is in a T shape with the front desk in the top of the T. The rooms in that part are not as nice as the ones in the long wing of the T. A couple of times, I flew into the area around 8 PM and by the time I got to the Ayres all of the rooms in the good wing were gone.
OK, let me try describing it another way. One section of the hotel faces Seal Beach Blvd on one side and the pool on the other side. This is the wing where the front desk and breakfast room are. The rooms are not as comfortable there.
The other section faces I405 on one side and the pool on the other side. You want this section. The rooms have microwaves and little fridges. The beds are comfy: I really like the place.
The hotel is quite convenient to Long Beach State (U.C. Long Beach), if that is where your swim meet is. Ask at the front desk how to get there (it is slightly tricky). If you are going into Long Beach, then I think it is 20 minutes or so, depending on traffic, and depending on where you are really going.
There are a couple of places to eat in the small shopping center next door (nothing fancy). From the hotel to the right on SB Blvd there are a few restaraunts. You should go left from the hotel and cross over 405 and keep going straight until you get into Seal Beach and see the pier. Then get out and walk around the small town there.

Does anyone know the name of a Japanese restaurant that starts with an M in town? I remember reading how good it was, but can't find it now. Also, any opininons on the Spaghettini Grill in town for a nice dinner one night? Thanks! ***kim***

I know of a Japanese place in Seal Beach called Koi-- but that doesn't begin with an "M"....
Spaghettini is pretty good, actually. My favorite place in Seal Beach is Walt's Wharf on Main (five minutes from the Ayres Hotel). Seafood, just perfect. If you've never had mongchong, they had it fresh Saturday, and oh man it was phenomenal.
The Ayres Hotel is a good choice (although it's right next to the I-405...). You never said if your daughter's meet was at the Belmont Pool or at Cal State Long Beach, but it's pretty convenient to both. There's a small minimall nearby, and downtown SB is a short drive away. And since you're right off the 405, you're a hop skip and jump to South Coast Plaza (Costa Mesa), Cerritos Mall (Cerritos, of course) and even Fashion Island (tony Newport Beach).

And just to expand on the location-- since you're on Seal Beach Blvd, you can get to the CSULB campus and the Belmont Pool without hopping the freeway, just by getting to PCH and heading north(west) toward Long Beach. About 10 to 15 minutes, depending on traffic.

Although, technically, the Ayres is in Seal Beach, those of us who grew up there consider that area to be Leisure World. The original Seal Beach was only a mile long and a mile wide and stopped far short of the 405 freeway. I only mention this because the original Seal Beach is quite charming and that area isn't.
That said, however, the Ayres hotel is in a very convenient location for getting just about anywhere. rjw_lgb_ca is right in that you're only five minutes from CSULB and only about fifteen minutes from Belmont Shore.
As for food, I agree that Walt's Wharf is a good choice for seafood in old Seal Beach (Main Street). Walter Babcock (the original owner) used to be my dentist and did quite well for himself with that restaurant and his own vineyard (Babcock Winery). If the swim-meet is in Belmont Shore, you've also got many good choices there. Try Mykonos for Greek food or Kelly's (in Naples--right before Belmont Shore) for great steaks and seafood (it's a real institution!) For great French there's Frenchy's in downtown LB.
Don't forget a visit to In & Out Burger!
