Avoid driving on the westside of Los Angeles July 15-17 weekend

A central portion of the 405 freeway will be completely closed during the weekend of July 15, most likely causing traffic nightmares all around the westside of Los Angeles. According to the LA TImes, that portion of freeway typically sees 500,000 vehicles on an average weekend! This is due to construction work taking place on bridges, ramps and overpasses.

Traffic officials are predicting massive delays and potentially unprecedented traffic congestion around the area.

The Getty Center and Skirball Center will be closed for the entire weekend.

If you're planning on driving to or from LAX, I'd allow LOTS of extra time, research alternate routes, or possibly even change my flight date.

It was good thinking on JohnH's part to post that alert, and it probably should be repeated frequently during the next 6 weeks to make sure that some visitor doesn't get blindsided. Here's the entire LA Times article.

It will be a potential nightmare but not impossible by any stretch of the imagination. LA has dozens of freeways. Those wishing to go north will just have to go more inland ( example: 105 to 110 to 5) and then north instead of directly north from LAX. There are a lot of alternate routes available.

Hopefully LA residents will stay put over that weekend so as not to clog up the roadways any more than normal. I would highly recommend any visitors get a recent map and map out an alternate route before they arrive and definitely allow extra time. Thank goodness it is happening over a weekend and not a weekday. Ughhh.

I wouldn't downplay the impact this is going to have. As the L.A. Times article pointed out, this is the busiest section of freeway in the entire country, and the closure is on a summer weekend. Sure, there are other freeways and alternate routes, but IMO some detours could add hours and the ripple effect will likely make it impossible to estimate the time needed to get anywhere.

Many locals have mastered the art of avoiding freeway problems, but I pity visitors without local knowledge who are anywhere near (or want to traverse) this area and the immediate neighboring communities that weekend.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (Wills and Kate) are scheduled to be in town that weekend. If the LAPD needs to do some short-term road closures for security reasons, oh boy....

I have to agree with Jean, I don't think it's going to be as simple as choosing an alternate freeway...Half a million cars are going to be displaced!

My company has rescheduled an event we were planning in Long Beach that Saturday.

If you or anyone you know will be visiting the LA area that weekend, please spread the word so that alternate arrangements can be made.

That's going to make Beverly Glen a nightmare. I'm going to just stay put. Happy Travels!

All the canyons will be parking lots. Then add all the east-west arteries you need to take to get to the alternative north-south routes...

I don't care what the officials promise, there will still be residents and hapless visitors who claim they either "had no idea" this was happening or didn't think it would be so bad.

The traffic reporters on news radio stations are now calling the closure weekend Carmageddon.

Jean -- love that line!

I live extremely close to the 405 where it's being shut down and am not looking forward to this. You'd think they'd be doing this to add a rail line down the center of the freeway (which would ulitmately have a beneficial impact) but somehow the powers that be have a myopic view that an extra lane of traffic is going to help. Maybe for 3 minutes.

There are alternatives -- coastal route for one, that gets you to the Valley via Topanga or Kanan Dune Road. Or middle of the road, Beverly Glen from Westwood, or Benedict Canyon from Beverly Hills, or Laurel Canyon, just east of the Strip. Or the Hollywood Freeway. Or the 110 or 5 from downtown.

Lots of options, but you need to plan ahead and look at a map.

Update: I heard on the news this morning that Sepulveda Boulevard between the 10-Santa Monica Fwy. and Ventura Boulevard will be closed during the period except to residents. Public trans in the area will be free.

Jean, I heard the same thing and thought about people who fly into LAX and have no clue about how to get around this mess. Glad we won't be anywhere near there.

Yeah, this is crazy. I'm so glad I won't be in the area on those days. It's going to be ugly.

There will be some unforeseen problems. For example, there is a synagogue up near the Skirball and non-residents are going to want to go there on saturday.

This post should be topped a few times a day until the nightmare is over!

I feel for the tourists who have no idea what this means.

"I love how this isn't on the news yet."

Where have you been? There's a segment on it on local TV news nearly every day. Yesterday, it was all about the couple whose wedding may be "ruined" because her family lives in the Valley and the wedding is in B.H. Well, duh. Leave earlier.

Not to mention being posted on all the digital boards on the freeway.

Wow GTO, you must not be watching any LA news station or driving any freeways as there has been tons of publicity about this coming headache for drivers.
