Would love some help planning a trip ex NYC for 4/5 nights, visiting Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. We would prefer not to drive and wonder if there is a little coach tour that would be suitable. Or by train? Any advice on pick spots; places to stay; places to avoid, and general information for 4 mature Australians to enjoy part of your beautiful country would be very much appreciated. We plan to have 8 nights in New York commencing around 15th September, and then go our our little tour around the 23/24th September. We are so pleased to have found this site and are so looking forward to our holiday.

Slightly different situation, but basically you most likely will be too early for peak foliage, except in northern Vermont or northern Maine. Train is not an option to Maine at all (at least where you would need to go). You could get to Vermont (Burlington or St. Albans) but would need to drive yourselves, hire a driver, or join a bus tour to see the foliage.
You might be able to find a bus tour to get you there from NYC - maybe others can advise on that.
First you're too early for fall color near NYC - we don;t turn until mid to late October. To see a lot of color at the end of September you really need to be up in Canada.
Second, train is not an option - out service is very limited except for the NE corridor (Boston down to DC) and that wouldn't show you color at that time of year - and isn;t really scenic. You might find a bus tour - but I think it would have to be out of Toronto or Montreal (and you would need to fly there) to see color in September.
(The biggest leaf peeping weekend of the year is the one around columbus Day - Oct 12th - for New England - and later for NY and along the coast.
Thank you both so much for your replies. When I went to book our flights on Qantas using frequent flyer points, I couldnt get seats anywhere near the dates we wanted! So back to the drawing board, and with your valuable information, will wait until October next year and get on to Qantas a little earlier. Now I know this Forum is here, I will be back in touch. And next year we'll make sure we visit in October.
