Austin music with a 14-year old
We are travelling to Dallas June 4 for the Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival. Our son is 14, plays guitar and loves music. We plan to spend 2-3 days in Austin and have been reading about the 6th Street music scene and Warehouse district. Are there places we can go with a young person under 21 to go to experience the music in Austin? Other fun things to do with an age 14 boy?

You might check out some ghost tours, if he likes stuff like that. I know there's at least one company in Austin that does walking tours with various themes that are not only fun but educational. Barton Springs is a huge spring fed swimming pool in Zilker Park-- but double check if people are still allowed to swim there. Note-- water is icy cold! Also, it might be fun to tour UT -- who knows, if he's into music he might want to go to college there. Right across the street from the UT Union Building on Guadalupe is a neat area with interesting shopping, including the Renaissance Market, which is a gathering place for artists to sell their wares, such as jewelry, clothes, ceramics, etc. It's a hippy 60s feel. If you are willing to venture out of the city a way, you might consider Schlitterbaun water park in New Bransfels-- voted the number one water park in the U.S. by the Travel Channel.
*I hope some Austinites will chime in on this one.

I visited Austin a few years back & we stopped in to eat at Threadgill's (near UT). That is where Janis Joplin started out in the early days. It still has music, I believe & the food was good. Here is a site with info on the Austin Music scene.

Go see the bats!!! Seriously! Watching the bats fly out from under the Congress Avenue bridge over Town Lake is an institution for nightfall in Austin. There will be large crowds, so get ther early to get parked and stake out a good spot.
Benj gave you a great website!
Unfortunately, most bars do not allow anyone under age 18 inside. Ther emight be one that is will ing to make an exception if the underage person is with his parents, but I kind of doubt it.

There are several restaurants that have live music. While you won't find top artists at these places it can be fun to eat & enjoy some music. Shady Grove, Threadgills, Jovitas, Stubbs...
Top acts that come to 6th street & warehouse district usually don't even start until late--9 or 10 p.m.--so if you could get him in a club, it would be a very late night.
When you get to town pick up a free Austin Chronicle (they are all over the place)...also check out:

The Austin American Statesman also lists activities that take place that day & over the weekend.
