August in Bar Harbor, Acadia, MDI Area

My family has a home leased in Lamoine for the first week of August and are looking for advice on restaurants, sites, history, and "must see's" in the area. Don't mind taking day driving trips as long as we can reasonably get out and back in one day. We have a nine year old son, so we are especially interested in whale watching, amusement parks, fishing, etc. that might hold his interest. Enjoy all kinds of food, especially good seafood, which we don't get much of at home in the midwest. We would appreciate any recommendations or, likewise, warnings as to what we should avoid. Thanks in advance for your help.

August in Bar Harbor area will be very crowded. We enjoyed a boat trip out of Bar Harbor to see the sights-saw lots of seals and even a bald eagle sitting on the rocks with the seals. It was a wonderful trip and narrated. We brought our son's bicycle there are lots of areas to ride and we saw many families out biking. The trip up to Cadillac was beautiful (he was 18 and rode his bike up and down- we drove). It probably is worthwhile to see the sunrise, but we didn't get up that early. We also played mini golf at Pirates Cove and I had to see all of the gardens open to the public. Our family finds walking time to be good family conversation time. It was cool when we went so we did not go swimming (it was early June). On the drive around the island we stopped at several scenic vistas. Consider a picnic, it makes a nice pause in the day and away from crowded restaurants. Enjoy the seafood.

my parents first began taking my brother and i to
bar harbor when we were about your son's age- he's
going to love it. there's lots to do in the park
and the ranger led activities are always fun. i would suggest the star talk on top of cadallic mountain- bring a blanket and a warm jacket, the
rangers tell the stories behind the constellations.
go swimming at the park lakes- the ocean is freezing
also you can rent canoes there. eat lunch at the jordan pond house- the popovers are delicious (and
also the homemade icecream). the town of bar harbor
offers lots of shopping- but that can get boring for
a kid. a good tradeoff is to go to the movies at
the old movie house- pay an extra back for the balcony its worth it! walk on the rocks on the coast
and investigate the tide pools.

we are planning a trip too and I found what looks like a great cataman ride to see whales and puffins.

try 1-800-whales4 if you are out of maine or 288-2386 in main..they didn't put the area code in the AAA book I'm reading. Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co. cash back if you don't see whales. how bad can it be. also, has a heated indoor area.

have fun

STAY AWAY FROM BAR HARBOR WHALE WATCH COMPANY!!! We were ripped off by the Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company (Bar Harbor, Maine). They did NOT honor their money back guarantee when we did NOT see any
whales. They would NOT refund our money. My advise is to use a reputable company!!
