Attention travelers: need suggestions for a mini vacation...
Hi travelers,
I would like to plan a mini vaction (about 4 nights) for mid-August. We are from Long Island, it is for my husband and myself (late 20's-no kids). Here are some criteria:
-not extensive travel time-(under 6 hr drive) (prefer to drive-but will fly)
-maybe a combination of some sightseeing and relaxation
-night life not a must
-moderately priced
-will go north,south - whatever
We haven't traveled many places together except for our Hawaii honeymoon and to Washington DC in a month, so I am up for any suggestions. Thanks for your input.
Thanks,
Cordelia

How about a Maine vacation? Not too far a drive, and a buntch of stuff to do in Southern Maine; Portland, Kennybunkport, Freeport, Ongunquit- these towns are all close enough together that you can use any of them as your home base. There's a great mixture of beach, quaint New England town, good food, shopping, and nature for a perfect 4 day vacation!

Anyplace in VT would be good. A visit to Shelburne Museum with a base in Burlington to enjoy some great restaurants with a side trip via ferry over to NY for a visit to Ausable Chasm? You might look for an event as a highlight, something really fun to do. We enjoyed the Highland Games in Brunswick ME one August but that would be too far a drive. We enjoy summer theater. If you would enjoy canoing, the rivers are low that time of year and there are a lot of places that rent canoes around the Concord NH area. But if you chose the Portsmouth NH area you could have summer theater, take a harbor cruise, spend a day at the great water park, enjoy some great restaurants, visit the farmers market on Sat morning, do some shopping in Kittery, visit Strawbery Banke. You might visit Yankee Magazine's website to see if there are some events that appeal to you: www.newengland.com.

Montreal?
City, parks, great restaurants, good sightseeing, it is cooler than NY in August.
It is also a pleasant drive getting there.
The people are friendly, the Frenchness gives it a great European feel. We do it every year in Aug or Nov.
our drive from NYC is 6 hours, but you can add an hour if one of you drives the speed limit, unlike my husband

Last summer we travelled from Long Island to Ogunquit, Maine, taking the ferry from Orient Point (reservations are required for the ferry). From New London I think it took four hours to get to Maine. Ogunquit gets very crowded in the town, but the beaches aren't crowded. You might like that.

Cordelia,
You've gotten great suggestions. I agree Maine sounds good but don't dismiss Nantucket. You could drive to the ferry (closer than Maine I think & would be fun to take all the ferries from LI) Nantucket has fabulous beaches as well as some great history & sightseeing. Go to Nantucket.org There are charming B & bs.
The idea of checking Southwest from Islip is a good one. Also, Delta Express (which becomes SONG airline today although the song.com website is not yet up and running) also flies out of Islip. They might be offering some specials soon to get PR for the name change.
Much closer to home, have you been to Shelter island? I'm a big fan. It's a unique place-very low key with easy access to sag harbor for a day of shopping, sighseeing etc.

What about:
Block Island, RI (a smaller, less commerical alternative to MA islands)
Newport, RI (mansions and coast are gorgeous)
Cuttyhunk Island, NY
Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket Island, MA (expect to pay big $ though)
Maine coast is really pretty, but if you travel in August, expect lots of traffic on Route 1. Should be about a 6 hour ride from LI.

Would recommend Newport, RI. Can take tours of the gorgeous mansions and there's a very nice cliff walk along the shore. Tennis Hall of Fame also located here if that interests you. Also a quaint little town just to walk around.....great shops and restaurants. As far as where to stay, there are numerous little B&Bs to choose from.
