Attending a wedding on Nantucket !

My wife and I will be attending a wedding on Nantucket Island the week after Labor Day. We already have a place to stay ( Veranda House). I need a suggestion for a hotel/ b & b in Hyannis and the best advice on where to leave our car for a few days while we take the ferry over to the island. Any other suggestions for restaurants, things to do on Nantucket would be appreciated as well. Thanks!!

Leave your car at the ferry parking lot - it is relatively inexpensive and their are shuttle lots with transportation if they are crowded.

Eventually Askislander will respond to your post - listen to everything in his/her post - they are always on-point and accurate.

TaDa!

I'm not smart, but I live there.

Congratulations! You have a place to stay.

Second thing you need is ferry reservations. I recommend The Steamship Authority fast ferry Iyanough because it docks in Nantucket only a few blocks from your hotel. As Gail says, they have multiple parking lots in Hyannis and a working shuttle system. Go to wwww.steamshipauthority.com for schedules and reservations. You won't save any money on a round trip ticket, but if you are traveling on the weekend, it will still be busy enough to sell out, so you want to be covered for your return. They leave on time, so try to be on the dock at least 20-30 minutes before sailing.

You don't need reservations for the car ferry, but they take 2h15m rather than 1h (and are much cheaper, time being money). You can also fly in 20 minutes but then you have a long taxi ride and it is $$$. Some of your friends will be on the Hy-Line. It is more expensive than the SSA, not convenient to your hotel, and often late.

Okay, you have a place to stay and a way to get here. You are two blocks from the heart of town, so you won't have any trouble finding things to buy. You are a block from the Congregational Church, three blocks from the Catholic Church and maybe five from the Episcopal church on Fair Street. You are a block from the beach bus stop in front of the Historical Association museum.

Most of the eating will be with your wedding pals, but if you can get away, where do you want to eat?: the Pearl and Cru are very expensive. The Pearl is definitely worth it. Cru has a great water location but can be a zoo. I love Lola41, but not in the summer, when it is also a zoo. My favorite restaurant for many years has been Oran Mor, but it has new owners, and I haven't tried it. Company of the Cauldron is very romantic but it is a fixed menu. The menu is posted outside. They can change it for you in advance, but no changes once you get there. Two interesting and reasonably priced restaurants near you are Town (Mediterranean) and Queequeg's (American bistro), which share a kitchen. Anywhere you go, you will need a reservation.

Lunch is easy. Provisions on Straight Wharf has really good takeout sandwiches, really good. On Cliff Road, you can eat excellent sandwiches in a park-like setting at Something Natural, though ordering is chaotic: separate lines for phone orders, in person orders, and bread only. These are about equidistant walks from where you are staying.

You either love Cisco Brewery or not. I love Cisco beer, and they have 'em all along with food trucks and live garage band music. They have a free shuttle from town that is a great service. But I don't like their porta potties and attitude, and I have been told that there are now cover charges. This may not be true or may only be for some events. Inquire locally.

Breakfast is tough. Black-eyed Susan's always has long lines. It must be in a guidebook, because locals don't eat there for breakfast. Fog Island Cafe also has long lines, mostly because of its location. Locals eat at the airport or at the Downyflake, but you need a car.

Finally, unless you have questions, some advice on fashion. Most of the places you will go in town have either cobblestones or uneven brick sidewalks. It is a local sport watching women and girls trying to navigate these in high platform shoes or spiked heels. It might be a good idea to carry these to the church and reception in a bag and put them on when you get there. Just sayin'

Questions cheerfully answered. Have fun!

I had a few paragraph response that didn't take. I copied and pasted it to no avail. I also mentioned Oran Mor, but didn't realize they had changed owners/management I also mentioned Queequeg as a favorite.

This is subjective, but I don't know if I'd refer to the parking as inexpensive. After Labor Day, depending on which lot you choose, it's $15-$17/day. Some of the lots have a catch, however: a "day" is each calendar day. So let's say you left on one day and returned the next day. That's two days, according to the way they figure it -- $30-$34 for a 24-hour period -- comparable to NYC prices. The shuttle lots tend to be cheaper, and less convenient. Just google "parking for Nantucket ferry."

Just a wild idea: If you're staying at a hotel/B&B in Hyannis that has free parking, you might ask the owners if you can leave the car there for a couple of days, and then taxi back and forth to the dock. The worst they can say is no.

Sending out my deepest appreciation for the wonderful suggestions!

The wedding is being held at Jetties Beach Restaurant & Bar. Still looking for Hotel or B & B suggestions for Hyannis.

Another question: If we choose to stay at a Starwoods Hotel in Eastham how difficult will it be to take the ferry out of Harwich to Nantucket?

I don't think dealing with the additional drive time and traffic is worth it. Also there is only one trip per day.

This hotel is walking distance to the ferry.

As is this one.

"Relatively inexpensive parking"

The price at private lots depends on the time of year and day of the week. It can be $20-25 for a calendar day (up to $50 for overnight) as vincenzo says. Steamship parking is fixed price so predictable. Neither is cheap.

There are a number of B&B's and motels near Main Street that offer free parking for a stay.

Harwich ferry
Harwich is fine if you can fit into their limited schedule and you have good weather. It isn't a very big boat. They also arrive on Straight Wharf like the Hy-Line, and it is a longish way to pull a suitcase over the cobblestones to the Verandah.

I ended up reserving a room at the Sea Coast Inn for the night and reserved round trip for the Steamship Authority. I will now contact Steamship and make a reservation to park my car for a few days. Thanks everyone!

OK. Now I need a few other suggestions for where to stay ( hotel/ b & b) in and around Welfleet for 3 - 4 days ( Monday - Thursday). We will be taking the 12:30 ferry from Nantucket to Hyannis, pick up our car and then drive towards Welfleet.

You might want to do another post for this. I have been to Wellfleet, but that's all.

"Wellfleet lodging, early September" might do it by attracting a whole new pool.

There are a few inns in the center of Wellfleet. The Holden Inn, the Wagner Inn at Duck Creek (formerly the Inn at Duck Creek, now totally renovated), and another inn near the Holden Inn, whose name I can't remember. From any of these, you can walk to a few good restaurants, Winslow's Tavern, Mac's Shack, Wicked Oyster, in the evening. There may be other BnB's as well.

I don't know your budget but the Even'tide Motel on Rt. 6 in South Wellfleet is set back from the road, has a large pool, is adjacent to the bike path, and is walkable, though not adjacent to the National Seashore Beach, Marconi. Friends of mine stayed there a few times and had no complaints.

Great information indeed!!! Should we consider Chatham instead? We are interested in hiking, good food, locations for photography, sightseeing, some live music at night, meeting people. We are not interested in sitting on the beach all day.

Given your interests, I'd stay in Wellfleet or Provincetown. Look at the website for the Cape Cod National Seashore. There are bike paths, great walks (including Great Island in Wellfleet), and endless beach walks. Go for a whale watch in Provincetown and take a tour with Art's Dune Tours. The National Seashore is unique and is made to be enjoyed in a relaxing way. Stop by their visitor center in Eastham and also the one in Provincetown for their observation deck with views of the bay and the ocean.

Climb the Highland Light in Truro and visit the adjacent Truro Historical Museum to get a sense of the local history.

You'll find more variety in Provincetown and more options for nightlife without driving.

Update! We ended up booking the Winstead Inn and Beach House in Harwich. Now also interested in some good restaurants in town, however, since we are so close to Chatham we can eat there as well.
