Atlanta on Sunday Evening?

Attending a convention in Atlanta and will be staying over on Sunday evening...I will be staying downtown and like most cities I am sure all of the restaurants in the downtown area will be closed. Is there a fun Sunday evening spot? I will have a car and do not mind driving. Thank You

Joan,
You will SOL downtown in Atlanta on a Sunday. Im not sure how late the "Underground" is open, but that is an option. Since you have a car, drive north on Peachtree St till you get to Buckhead (couple miles). Lots of trendy bar/restaurant type places to hang.

If you like a good burger, go to The Vortex. Get the BBQ burger.

Yeah, you'll want to get out of downtown. What kind of a restaurant are you looking for? Will you be alone?

If you're really truly downtown, consider visiting Atlanta midtown. Buckhead is a bit more than a couple of miles away. Or hop on the Expressway for Buckhead, and follow I75 North to the West Paces Ferry Rd. exit. Go east two miles to Buckhead. Look at a map. You can park in the center of Buckhead (near Peachtree Rd.) or drive Pharr Rd. to Piedmont Rd., a mile away, where there are more restaurants. Take a good look at a map, and get a Zagat's guide.

Thank you all for your help with Sunday evening in Atlanta. I will be with my husband and we like a variety when it comes to restaurants - not too fond of chains. We will be meeting friends for dinner on Sat and have reservations for Nava. Thanks for your help. jwg

OK. That helps. Nava is in the center of Buckhead, is fairly expensive, southwestern food and is often praised for its atmosphere over its food (that does not mean that a good meal cannot be had there). Dress to impress.

A couple of good Italian options in Inman Park are closed Sunday, so maybe South City Kitchen on Cresent Street is a good option. A converted old house beneath the Midtown skyline, it's a lively place with New American with a southern flair food. On the street are numerous bars/restaurants to have a drink at before or after, but I'm not sure how many are open Sun night. South City Kitchen is open. It's an easy 2 mile drive from Downtown. You can probably find more info on the web.

Let me know if you're looking for something else.

Buckhead is a great place to go EXCEPT on Sunday nights. It is overrun with hoods and pimps and bad news due to the HIPHOP nights most bars/clubs have on Sunday nights. Try going out in VA highlands or up in the Vinings. It will be far less scary and no chance in Ray Lewis taking you out.

Virginia Highlands (from Va. Ave, to Ponce de Leon Ave.) offers decent restaurants - there's a dynamite Thai place. You can also try several places on Piedmont Rd. a few blocks south of its intersection with Peachtree. At Lenox Square or in the Ritz Carlton down Peachtree one mile are some terrific restaurants - e.g., Brasserie Le Coze in Lenox Sq., or the Diningroom at the Ritz.

For fun, and if on Sunday, Try Dantes Down the Hatch located on Peachtree Road, across from Lenox Mall.

Lisa the bartendar makes great drinks. Enjoy a live jazz band (good too) on the 'ship' yes a real ship! See the live crocs in a moat and even have a conversation with the aging dante himself.

Sad news. Dante's in Buckhead burned down last night. I hear the alligators made it, but everything else is gone.
