Atlanta: Chastain Park amphitheater parking/ hotel?

I am hoping Atlantans can give me some advice. I am planning a trip to Georgia and just got tickets to a concert in Chastain Park. The amphitheater website says parking is "exceedingly limited" and suggests arriving early and carpooling, so I am concerned that we might not be able to find a place to park. We are completely unfamiliar with the area. In the past we have only driven through Atlanta.

We will be visiting relatives about an hour outside Atlanta, so we could drive in to the concert from there, and return that night. However, I would rather drive into Atlanta, check into a hotel, and go to the concert from the hotel, as that makes it more of a special night. (I also would prefer not to drive back out of the city late at night because the route to relatives' seems to have a lot of accidents.)

I looked on Mapquest for hotels close to the amphitheater. The closest was Wingate, supposedly under 2 miles, and they have free limo service within 3 miles. But when I called the hotel they said the park is outside the limo area.

So for those who are familiar with this area, what do you suggest? Do you think parking will really be a problem?

Thanks and "aloha" to all!

There are several parking lots at Chastain but it is in the middle of a residential neighborhood and you may have to walk a bit from your parking space. You will have no problem finding a parking space. The neighbors complain about the traffic and noise from concerts so Chastain makes an effort to encourage people to carpool to appease the neighbors. A hotel in Buckhead will be most convenient for you. Have fun! My first date with my husband was at Chastain.

I would go with Wingate, easy access off 400; I'm surprised they wouldn't offer you the limo ride, if it's over 3 miles it must be 3 miles and a foot! Heres my suggestion: Stay at Wingate; make reservations for the Horseradish Grill for dinner, take the LIMO to restaurant, (Push Wingate!, I know it's less that 3 miles!!) and then after dinner you can walk through Chastain Park to the amphitheater. Very short walk from Horseradish. Chastain is always voted in top five of outdoor venues by the music industry. You will have a neat experience. As far as after the concert you could take taxi of call the limo driver!

The Wingate is less than 3 miles but I am guessing that the Wingate just doesn't want to deal with taking guests to the Chastain concerts due to the traffic, hassle of having to go back to pick up the guests, etc.

Thanks, P Adams and Smokyboy, for your fast and informative replies. Fodorites are a great bunch--I love being able to get such detailed help here! I now have a better idea of what the area is like. Horseradish Grill sounds good--esp. the brunch menu; we may do that.

Since the Wingate wasn't helpful, I looked at other hotels. The Doubletree website said they had shuttle w/in 3 miles, AND that Chastain Pk Amph. was 3 miles away. So I called them, and very helpful staff said they would certainly shuttle us up there and back. He confirmed that there are pay phones at the Amph. so we can call the shuttle, or a taxi if concert runs past the shuttle hours. And now we know we can park on the street if we decide that would be easier. Their rate was a couple dollars less than Wingate, too, including the parking fee. If something better for the night turns up, I can always cancel this.

If there are any other suggestions for this evening, would still like to hear them. Thanks again!

aloha, aren't fodorites just the best? You got great advice and I'm glad to see you found a helpful staff member at a hotel exhibiting some Southern hospitality.

Definitely do the Horseradish Grill. We did brunch there about a month ago for the first time and it is definitely a do again.

Which concert? Santana? Just my guess..

Yep, we'll be going to the Santana concert---although I am a HUGE fan of Los Lonely boys so I am thinking of it as the LLB concert ;-)

Btw, I need to check out these LLB's. Anybody with a drummer named Ringo and a band that Willie Nelson calls his favorite, I got to put the headphones on and take a listen.

Smokyboy, if you haven't heard LLB yet, you are in for a treat. They sound like Santana and Stevie Ray Vaughan combined.

If the Doubletree will shuttle you there, one idea is to have them follow one of you in the car before dinner and then park on the street somewhere. That way, after the concert you can just walk to your car and drive it back.

We usually do this when going to Chastain in a group - drop one car off early. It's nice that the Doubletree will pick up up after...but the traffic says jammed for a while after the concert. You'll have quite a wait for them if they drive to Chastain in the midst of the traffic mess.

Starrsville, thanks for your comment. I need to ask for some clarification...if you think it is better to park on the street than to shuttle after the concert, would it not be simpler just to drive to the concert also?

Well, yes. I must have gotten confused during this post. I thought you were planning to do dinner before.

The best thing about concerts at Chastain is to dinner IN the amphitheatre. You are about to experience one of the most elaborate "picnic" venues of all time. There are tables for 6 near the stage, but (almost) everyone else in regular seating brings folding tables, tablecloths, rolling coolers with drinks (also serves as a table surface), elaborate foods, candles, wine, etc. Dinner at Chastain is a big deal...and a lot of fun! If you don't want to worry about preparing your own feast, there are caterers there where you can pre-order and pick up your boxed dinner.

I have my standard Chastain menu that travels well in the picnic basket and cooler. I'll try to find a link that gives you more info.

The first time I went someone told us to bring something to eat and drink. We took a 6 pack of beer and Dorito's. We were the source of entertainment and mucho chuckles for those around us!

Here's a link that lists the two caterers on site - http://www.digitalcity.com/atlanta/e...sbid=103587015

We stayed at the Wingate in Buckhead last weekend while in Atlanta to see Tony Bennett at Chastain Park. The hotel limo took us to the concert and picked us up afterwords. They were extremely accomodating and the hotel was a very good value. We will definately stay there again when we go back to Chastain. We are hooked on the Park after one visit. It was a magical night.
