atlanta

I am planning on relocating my family to the atlanta region within the next 6 months. We are in our thirties and would like to live in a nice suburb with good schools, decent shopping and decent restaurant options. I will probably be working around henry county with flexible work hours. We are considering peachtree city, snellville and eagles landing. I like snellville because I can take backroads like rt 124 into henry county, and snellville has good access to north atlanta etc. I think that mcdonough and stockbridge our decent but lack upscale shopping options, and have average schools. Peachtree city has great schools and some shopping, but is kind of isolated from metro atlanta. I would greatly appreciated some input from people who live in atlanta, thanks in advance

Am topping for you so atlswan, starrsville and others who know that side of town can steer you in the right direction...I'm a top end girl and really haven't spent time in the areas you're looking at...

There is no way, no way, no way you can commute from Snellville to Henry County and retain your sanity. Well, that's my humble opinion anyway.

I used to live on 124, have family memmbers in Snellville and commute to Henry County (outside rush hour) for business purposes at least once a month. I'm about halfway between Snellville and Henry County and I drive in both directions regularly.

If you are going to live in Snellville, put your kids in Brookwood HS feeder cluster schools - or Parkview. If you are going to work in Henry County, put your kids in Henry County schools. Eagles Landing is nice - but there are a lot of new subdivisions going up. Henry County used to be an "exurb" but it is solidly becoming a suburb. It's not a bad trip into Atlanta when/if you want to go.

Peachtree City has a good reputation - its just a bit too "planned" for my tastes, but those who live there like it.

The shopping is coming your way. I had lunch today in Conyers with someone from Alpharetta - who was amazed at the shopping that is now "out in the boondocks". She wanted maternity clothes from Old Navy - and Conyers had the department - when Alpharetta / Northpoint didn't. The shopping is moving to Henry County too.

#1 concern about relocating to Atlanta - your commute. #1B if you have kids - schools. All else is negotiable - but you will be miserable with a long commute in Atlanta.

Could not agree with Starrsville more! I about fell out of my chair when I saw you were considering Snellville. It is jammed during rush hour - (6:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. until 7 p.m.)

Eagles Landing is very, very nice. As is P'tree City. You would be well-served to stay south. And, again to Starr's point, shopping is coming to an area near you if you are anywhere in metro Atlanta.

Good luck with you move and your decisions!

just so you know, peachtree city is probably a good hour at least from wherever you'd be at in henry county - regardless of whether you take the interstate or not - i live in fayetteville, a town just east of PTC, and it takes me about 50 minutes (non-interstate) to visit my parents in mcdonough - granted the ride is a rather enjoyable one, but i know some people have phobias of long commutes and just wanted to share...

i never thought i'd want to leave midtown and didn't have the best impression of PTC while i was living in the city, but now that i'm out here i see the charms that PTC has - its got more decent restaurants (subjective, i know) than most other sub-suburban places and is about an hour from downtown which isn't close but isn't that far either...

i grew up in stockbridge and would agree with your assessment of it - although the whole eagles landing area wasn't really established until the last decade or so so i don't know too much about it...

Another Atlantan here- you're getting good advice. You want to live as close to the job with as good as schools as you can get with a reasonable commute (Snellville to Henry County isn't reasonable).

I wouldn't be so concerned with the dining and shopping options. You can drive across town to shop or go to a restaurant much more easily (presuming you won't be shopping and dining out daily) than facing a long, miserable commute daily. The malls around Atlanta have all the same stores except for Lenox and Phipps in Buckhead (and even those malls have all the usual stores you find everywhere else). As for restaurants, the suburbs have all the usual chain restaurants. The more unique, interesting upscale dining options are intown with some good restaurants in the far north suburbs such as Alpharetta. Henry County is a fast growing area with some good neighborhoods for families. I'd stick with Henry County for housing.

I used to own a home in Alpharetta. I now live in Seattle (have for 6 years) but will be moving back to Atlanta in the next 6 months as well. We are building our new home in Cumming. We hear everyone is moving up there. I can't wait to return to Atlanta.

Congrats on your decision to move to the Atlanta area!

It's worth repeating: avoid a long commute at all costs.

I live east of Atlanta and the commute into town is horrendous. I have never experienced traffic like this before. I plan to move in a few years to another home in the Atlanta area and I am already fantasizing about a short commute...

Good luck

Honestly, there's not much more I can add to what's been said. But I will reiterate that you DO NOT want to commute from Snellville to Henry County. Unless you want to live in your car for much of the day, this is not something I would recommend for anybody.

McDonough really is coming into its own, I have to say. It used to be tiny but it is booming now. The shopping/dining options are increasing by the day. And Henry Co. schools, while not out of this world, are pretty good.

Peachtree City is kind of a world unto itself. I like some aspects of it but I think it is chafing at the growth it is experiencing, to be honest. The schools are some of the best, however, so that is something to think about.
But as someone else pointed out, you'd still have a bit of a drive.

While Snelville may be closer to North Atlanta, the traffic is some of the worst known to mankind during peak times.

We live north of Snellville, and we plan our trips into Atlanta based on traffic when we can. I agree with the others who have posted -- Snellville to Henry County is a LONG commute, and you will almost for sure be very tired of this commute after a short while. Consider something closer to Henry County.

Welcome to Georgia!

I would like to thank everyone for your wonderful insight and suggestions. I really underestimated the traffic factor and will surely eliminate snellville from my relocation options. I am strongly considering the eagles landing area, and to a lesser degree peachtree city. I am glad to hear that henry county may finally get some decent shopping and places to eat. I will be patient, thanks again
