I got some great recommendations for restaurants on an earlier thread, but it didn't offer much in the way of Asian restaurants. Any recommendations? We'll be carless so ones that are accessible by foot (we love walking) or easy bus trips. thanks!

"asian" is a pretty broad category. Thai? Chinese? Vietnamese? Fusion? each is pretty different.
for restaurant recs i typically go to chowhound.com
Chinese in the City:
R&G Lounge
Yank Sing or City View for Dim Sum
Vietnamese / Fusion:
Slanted Door (this is one of the more popular spots in SF so you need to make reservations well ahead of time)
The House - this is an asian fusion restaurant in North Beach - it's quite small but very nice and popular - make reservations
Ana Mandara - near Ghiradelli Square i think - it's a big beautiful restaurant. more touristy but it's a nice room and the food is good.
my question is as above, what type of food???
Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Korean, Vietnamese...
Any particular price range or ambience you're looking for?
Slanted Door is wonderful. It's in the Ferry Building and very walkable if you're in the Financial District or even Union Suare area.
Thanks for the ideas so far.
In answer to the question, what type of Asian food? -- any and all. We like Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodian, Korean, Japanese, Asian fusion is good too...not really particluar. Pricewise, I think more mid ranged ($40-$50 a person) than high end (although I know sushi can be expensive.)
the places i know are more like 12-15/person with drinks. No reason to eat high end asian here unless you want to spend extra money.
Slanted Door is good, but expensive.
Burma Start has lines out the door for a reason! Fantastic Burmese food. Either on Clement Street or Geary.

We love Thanh Long on Judah & 46th. www.anfamily.com
garlic noodles & Shaken Beef - don't miss !!!

We like
Thanks! One question on Thanh Long which sounds delicious. We're staying at Union Sq. How much of a hassle would it be to bus it there? Any idea on what a taxi fare?
mztery -- would love to hear your suggestions for places that are $12-$15
yestravel, it would take about an hour to get to Thanh Long by public transport. Taxi fare: hopstop says about $22.00 (not sure whether that factors in a tip).
Thanks, sf--that kills that idea...$44 round trip is a bit much as is 2 hours by bus!
Every San Franciscan has their favorite Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, or Korean restaurant and it is usually located in their neighbor or out in the Sunset or Richmond districts of SF, which are definitely not walking distance to Union Square or a quick bus ride. That is why places like Slanted Door, Ana Mandara and Yank Sing are usual recommendations for visitors, even though they are fairly expensive.
SAB, yes, we've eaten in the Richmond district b4 and plan to go there on our last night when we have a car. I was hoping to identify some good, but reasonable places within the downtown area.
yestravel, WHY are you going to the Richmond District?
I'm surptised that it takes 1 hr to get to Thanh Long on the N-Judah. Is there a Muni web site with "standard" schedules???
Stu Dudley
Another vote for the Slanted Door.
sf -- its been a few years but we've had both Cambodian and Korean food there and it was great. not such a good idea??
I assume they are going to the Richmond because of the wealth of Asian restaurants there and they will have a car.
Yestravel, there aren't as many Asian restaurants downtown because of the proximity of Chinatown and the ones that are there are either inexpensive lunch spots for workers to grab lunch or more upscale, like E&O Trading, Yank Sing et al.
OK, 35 minutes on the N-Judah (plus the time to walk to the Powell Street muni stop), so about 45 minutes total. Not that I would do it, but better than an hour, I guess.
Thanks for all the recs--we ate at Ana Madrana when we first arrived in SF. Beautiful interior and we had a good meal there.
We will be back in SF tomorrow evening with a car. Checked on Than Long (sp?) And it's closed on Mondays. Thinking we'll go to Burma super Star--r both locations equally good? When I google on my BB for some reason only the Clement St comes up.We'll be staying near SFO so all things equal would prefer whichever one is closer. Thanks!
You should eat at Mingalaba in Burlingame (Burmese-Chinese menu)!!
I've never been, but Burma Superstar appears to have only one location in San Francisco (the others are in Oakland and Alameda, so definitely farther from SFO). The Clement Street location of Burma Superstar isn't bad. You can get from their to the airport by heading back toward downtown SF and taking 101 South.
Hi SF--that sounds like a good choice--do u have an address for it. Being in Burlingame will make it easy to get back to Airort Hotel.
Thanks! Mingalana sounds good--nice to be closer to SFO
Yes - Burma Superstar!! My new fav; there's one in Oaklnad, too.
In SF we continually go to Hunan Homes in Chinatown - on Jackson between Grant and Kearny.
Mingalaba was delcious and only 10 mins from our hotel at SFO. Thanjs for suggestion, sf.
Oh, where is easytraveler? She has a place just south of SF that is wonderful... but I can't remember the name!
Glad to learn about Mingalaba, just in case we need a place to eat in that area sometime.
Go to R&G Lounge. You won't be disappointed. A tad on the pricier side tho.
