ashland ideas

we'll be in Ashland in 2 weeks, chaperoning for a school trip. I've been told that we don't do a whole lot as chaperones, so I need suggestions on places to eat and things to do. I understand that there are some wineries in the area?
any suggestions would be great
thanks
Liz

If it is Ashland, OR you will have a great time! Try the Peerless Hotel or Chateaulin for nice dinners. For lunch, Alex's is nice. Avoid Gepetto's at all costs.

There is a bistro at The Ashland Springs Hotel that is nice for lunch. If you can get away for an hour, there is a great spa across the street from the Ashland Springs Hotel.

Lots of great shops. Lithia Park is nice to feed the ducks and take walks. There is a great bakery, The Ashland Fudge Co. that has killer fudge and ice cream. Take in the Green Show that starts around 7:00pm. It is a free show that is very good. Have fun! I hope you're talking about Ashland, OR!! Have fun!! ***kim***

One more thought: you may want to save that wine-tasting until AFTER your chaperone duties are over! LOL ***kim*** What is the age group of the school children?

Hi Liz! What brings a group of 7th graders to Ashland? Are they studying Shakerpeare? Just curious. We haven't tried any of the wineries in this area. I would also like to know what's in the area. Maybe Panhandle could help us out here! ***kim***

lizblin, you may have clicked Oregon when you posted, but as you can clearly see, there are no separate boards for each state, so no one knows where you were talking about. The only reason for clicking a state is for later searches. If someone wants information about Oregon, he can click that when he searches a topic and only get the threads that were pinpointed originally for that state.

lizblin:

You will have a great time. My hubby and I go annually and have done so for many, many years.

I go three times a year. Once with hubby, once with my students(5th-7th grade over 5 years) and once with about 10 other couples.

This year I will go twice as I no longer teach.

That aside, your lodging location will be key. Hopefully you are close enough to walk to everything.

In two weeks you will have the opportunity to dine at all of the restaurants of note at least once.

Geppetos has gone through a renovation and several badly needed changes. Give them a try.

Try not to hang out at the Starbucks "all the time" with the other non-working chaperones.

All of my chaperones were on duty 24 hours so count yourself very lucky.

More importantly, go see the plays that you will not see with the kids.

Like previous years...this years line up of plays is fabulous.

I could go on and on!

You have to go to the Oregon Shakespeare Website (OSF).

Explore the website...it is wonderful and will give you details on restaurants, spas, wineries and so much more.
You will also get to know the availability of tickets for plays that you may wish to see.

If it turns out that you have a few days without duty then I implore you to rent a car and make your way to the Oregon Coast and into the Willamette Valley for the wine tasting which is very good.

If you have more querries...let me know.

Happy Planning,
Oaktown Traveler

When was Gepetto's renovated? We were there last August with our three teens. We were very hungry and couldn't find any other places open, so we didn't have very many choices.

Our service was the most horrible I have ever had at a restaurant (we dine out a lot!) The food was horrid. I had the salmon which was so overcooked I could barely eat it. The four others with us agreed, the food was awful. We could barely stand to pay the bill.

If you are staying the night, The Ashland Springs Hotel would be wonderful for the adults. If you dont get to stay there, walk around the place, it's beautiful. Very conveniently located to all the shops, restaurants, etc. I do hope you get to try Chateaulin for a very special treat. Try their prix fixe menu, it's outstanding and ours came with two glasses of excellent wine! Have fun! ***kim*** I have also heard great things about New Sammy's Cowboy Bistro about five minutes up the road in Talent.

Do try New Sammy's Cowboy Bistro--in our experience, it's much better than any of the restaurants right in Ashland. Be sure and make reservations as it's small, and you might want to get directions. Though not hard to find, it's easy to overlook.

My wife always enjoys poking around in nearby Jacksonville, with a stop at Harry and David's along the way.

September it was closed for renovations...you will need to ask them. I merely walked by, took note and kept going.

I suggest this place because breakfast, with the school children, can be good there. I have never had dinner at Geppettos even with my school kids.

They love/like Munchies and I will tolerate eating there with them and the chaperones. Ironically, someone always winds up getting sick from their food...go figure.

My husband and I have never taken a meal at Geppettos together...not our style. It is for families and school children.

No argument just information.

While the "Springs" is nice it is expensive. Parents who have paid, in whole or in part, for you to attend will scream bloody murder...been there-done that...had to rescue the parent who insisted that she stay there.

"Chateau" is also very expensive. This could be your treat meal. You have to have reservations and if they are busy, which they always are, you could leave there going...what was the rave about?

They, as an establishment, are recognized excellence but, they are human. My husband likes them, as do I but, many "gems" exist so go, seek them out!

My Best,

thanks to everyone for all the ideas...we fortunate that the kids will be on their own to eat (unless they want to hang with us)!
happy travels to all

Actually, I found Chateaulin to be very reasonable. The prix fixe menu was only $29 for a three course meal with two glasses of nice wine. I was at the Dry Creek Kitchen in Healdsburg a couple of days ago and their tasting menu was $70/pp with no wine included.

We have also received wonderful deals on the ASH. One stay we only had to pay $79/night for a wonderful suite on the fifth floor.

As far as Gepettos, renovations or not, I won't go anywhere near that place! LOL ***kim***
