We (two adults, mid 50s) are visiting Asheville NC for 3 nights in early June for the first time. Our main objective is to visit Biltmore, but we are also looking forward to seeing Asheville itself. We enjoy walking and hiking and want to stay in a hotel from where we can walk to downtown Asheville.
We have looked at the Residence Inn, near the Biltmore entrance, which appears to be about 1 or 1 1/2 miles from downtown. Walking that distance is a breeze for us. However, I cannot determine whether the walk would be pleasant, through either residential or pedestrian commercial districts, or if the walk would be uninteresting or dreary.
Any information would be appreciated. Thanks all.

Well, you will go by the hospital and through some office areas. There are some nice homes along the way especially on the Biltmore end. Once you get closer to town there are several little shops/stores to stop in on the way up to the square. If you don't mind walking up the hills, it wouldn't be a bad walk. I think the area around Biltmore is pretty nice too - we like to eat at Razazz or Fig if we are in the area. That may not be the best meal advice-there are so many good place downtown! Have a great trip! Others may recommend you stay downtown.
