Asheville Bele Chere

We are planning a trip to Asheville and I just found out it is the same weekend as Bele Chere. I don't think I would want to go to that festival. I am wondering is the entire town involved or just downtown? If we stay near Biltmore would we avoid the crowds and traffic? Or, would it be better to go some other time?

Spoke with a hotel there that recommended that I come another weekend because she said the whole town is bad that weekend with fights, drunks, etc. Anyone have a different opinion?

Yes, my in laws go every year and I've never heard them mention fights and drunks (they live in Asheville).

I've not been but Bele Chere is supposed to be a great arts festival.

Maybe one of the locals will chime in for you.

Hi,
Bele Chere is really only in downtown Asheville. If you are staying near Biltmore, you will avoid most of the crowds. That said, Asheville has a GREAT downtown. It would be a real shame to miss it. Can you come another weekend?

Having been to Bele Chere, I have to say that there is great musical entertainment, a wide variety of listening styles to choose from, some tasty food and huge crowds.

So, if you don't like crowded places, the downtown area would not be your cup of tea during the festival.

On the other hand, there are also vendors selling interesting local crafts, food and souvenirs.

Although drinking alcoholic beverages is allowed, I've never personally encountered or witnessed any bad drunks, fighting or problems.

Many of the activities during the festival are family-oriented and designed for children to enjoy.

They have scaled back Bele Chere with more local acts so it hopefully will not be quite as big this year. We lived within walking distance of downtown for 2 yrs and would walk up to Bele Chere. Later evening performances can get a bit rowdy but there was always a significant police presence. I would go day time or early evening if you have concerns.
